For the first time this season, the Cup Series takes to the track on Saturday night for a little action under the lights. The 1.5-mile track is an annual contender for the fastest on the schedule, and average speeds at more than 190 mph are the norm. While the high speeds lead to plenty of exciting racing, it has also led to some violent wrecks in recent years. To win at Texas, it takes plenty of power under the hood, a strong aero package, and the ability to stay out of trouble.

Last April, Matt Kenseth delivered one of the dominating performances of the season. He led 169 of the 334 laps building insurmountable leads for most of the second half of the race. He was unchallenged in the closing laps, easily beating Clint Bowyer to the line. It was a banner night for Roush Fenway Racing. In addition to Kenseth’s victory, the organization put two other drivers in the top four and three in the top seven.

In the fall event, Kenseth and Roush Fenway Racing again had a strong showing, but it was Tony Stewart that ruled the day. Stewart led 173 laps and held off Carl Edwards down the stretch to pick up the win. Edwards was one of three Roush drivers in the top five, and Kenseth led 87 more laps on his way to a fourth-place finish.

The Favorites – 2012 Samsung Mobile 500 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

He is the defending winner of this weekend’s race, and running well at Texas is nothing new for Matt Kenseth. He leads all drivers with an 8.7 average finish at the track, and he is a two-time winner. In his last 10 starts at Texas, Kenseth has nine top-10 finishes and seven top-five finishes. He has also finished fourth or better in three straight starts at the track.

His dominating win last fall was Tony Stewart’s second-career win at Texas Motor Speedway. More importantly, he has been on a tear at the 1.5-mile tracks. He has won four of the last six races at tracks with the layout, including three straight. Until someone can dethrone Stewart, he is a threat whenever the series visits a 1.5-mile track.

Last year, Carl Edwards finished second and third in two starts at Texas. For his career, he has a series-leading three victories at the track. Edwards has yet to deliver a dominating performance in 2012, but at a track where he has made three trips to Victory Lane, he could finally break out Saturday night.

The Dark Horses – 2012 Samsung Mobile 500 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

Not only is he the point leader entering the race, but Greg Biffle leads all drivers with seven straight top-10 finishes at Texas. During the stretch, he has five top-five finishes, including three straight. Biffle’s lone win at the track came in 2005, but with as well as he has been running at the track lately and in 2012, he could be making a return visit to Victory Lane this weekend.

He has gotten off to a fast start with Michael Waltrip Racing, and Clint Bowyer should continue to find success this weekend at Texas. He has finished ninth or better in three straight starts at the track, including a second-place finish last April. MWR has exploded out of the gate as an organization in 2012, and the only thing missing is a win. Bowyer could deliver one Saturday night.

Sleeper Specials – 2012 Samsung Mobile 500 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

Although he runs a limited schedule, Trevor Bayne has already shown with his 2011 Daytona 500 win that he can take down the big boys at the Cup level. He has made three career Cup starts at Texas, and he has finished 17th in all three starts. Bayne also has a Nationwide win at the track, along with great equipment. Wood Brothers Racing gets its equipment from Roush Fenway Racing, and as well as RFR has performed at Texas, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Bayne challenging for the win.

Moving to Richard Petty Motorsports paid big dividends for Marcos Ambrose at Texas last season. He finished a career-best sixth at the track last April and followed it up with an 11th-place run in the fall. Ambrose now has three straight finishes of 12th or better at the track, and if he is going to get a win at an oval track, it could happen at Texas.

Drivers to Avoid – 2012 Samsung Mobile 500 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

Although he is coming off a win last weekend, Ryan Newman is a risky pick at Texas Saturday. He has gone seven straight starts at the track without a top-10 finish and has a 20.7 average finish at Texas for his career. In 17 starts, Newman has just three top-10 finishes.

Brad Keselowski has definitely arrived as a star in the Cup Series, but Texas has been a house of horrors for the young driver. In seven starts, he has yet to crack to the top 10 and has just one finish inside the top 15. Keselowski has a 23.7 average finish at Texas, and he just doesn’t seem to have a feel for the fast oval yet.
