When progressive banking was added to widen the groove at Bristol Motor Speedway in 2007, the track’s personality changed. The bumping and banging and short tempers that made the track famous were replaced by comfortable side-by-side racing and long green flag runs. Not surprisingly, attendance began to slip for a track that once owned the toughest ticket to get in the sport because of a lack of action. As a result, changes for made to Bristol’s surface following the March race earlier this season, shrinking the groove and removing some of the added banking. Nobody is exactly sure how the cars will handle the reconfigured track, but it should be fun to find out this weekend.

Last August, Jeff Gordon and Matt Kenseth appeared to have the cars to beat. The two combined to lead 316 of the 500 laps with Gordon leading a race-high 206. However, the decision to take tires on the final pit stop of the race proved fatal for both drivers’ chances of winning. Several cars stayed out or took just two tires, and Gordon and Kenseth ran out of laps before they could work their way back to the front. Meanwhile, Brad Keselowski parlayed the decision to stay out on old tires into his first career win at Bristol.

Earlier this year, it was the Keselowski show once again, but he didn’t need pit strategy this time. He led a race-high 232 laps on his way to his second straight win at the track. Brian Vickers and Kenseth were to two biggest threats to his repeat victory, but Vickers’ car faded a bit after leading 125 laps early. Meanwhile, Kenseth mounted several runs at Keselowski, getting to the back bumper of the No. 2 on multiple occasions. However, Kenseth could never complete the pass, and Keselowski eventually inched away in the closing laps.

The Favorites – 2012 Irwin Tools Night Race Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

You have to love Brad Keselowski’s chances of winning this weekend. After all, he is gunning for a three-peat at Bristol after winning at the track last August and earlier this year. Not to mention the fact that he has been the hottest driver in the series the last two months, scoring more points than any other driver in the last six races. Recent history and momentum are on his side.

Bad luck has been following Kyle Busch around lately, but a trip to Bristol could be just what the doctor ordered. He is a five-time winner at the half-mile track, and four of those wins have come in the last seven races. Busch needs a win to help ensure that he makes the playoffs, and considering he is one of the top short track racers in NASCAR today, he just might the victory he needs this weekend.

The Dark Horses – 2012 Irwin Tools Night Race Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

Although his last win at Bristol came back in 2006, Matt Kenseth has been on the verge of another trip to Victory Lane for the last several seasons. He has six straight top-10s at the track, including three straight finishes of sixth or better. Kenseth finished second at Bristol in March, and he will no doubt be eyeing a win in the return trip to the track this weekend.

All three Michael Waltrip Racing cars finished in the top five at Bristol in March, and Martin Truex Jr. led the way with a third-place finish. That performance followed a second-place effort at the track last August, leaving little doubt that he has found a setup that works for him. After back-to-back top-three efforts at Bristol, the next step for Truex is to break through and win.

Ryan Newman has been the model of consistency at Bristol in recent years. In his last 10 starts at the track, he has finished 12th or better eight times. His 11.1 average finish during the stretch is the fourth-best in the series, and he has finished sixth in three of the last four night races at the track. Newman has also scored the third-most points in the series over the last six races, and the added momentum could be just what he needs to turn one of his solid finishes into a win.

Sleeper Specials – 2012 Irwin Tools Night Race Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

Prior to his start at Bristol in March, Brian Vickers had never even cracked the top 10 at the track. He changed that in a big way earlier this year, finishing a strong fifth. It is important to note that his top-five performance came in his first start at Bristol with Michael Waltrip Racing, and he happens to be back in the MWR No. 55 machine this weekend. The sample size is limited, but Vickers looked pretty darn good in the March race.

It has been a long year for Kurt Busch, but if something good is going to happen for him, it could happen this weekend. After all, his five victories at Bristol are his most at any track on the schedule, and his 10.5 average finish in the last 10 races at Bristol is the third best in the series. Busch didn’t run great at the track in March, but it was one of the few times he was competitive since moving to Phoenix Racing. The return trip this weekend is a chance for him to recapture his Bristol magic.

Big Name to Avoid – 2012 Irwin Tools Night Race Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

Despite being one of the more decorated short track drivers in the series today, Tony Stewart has had his issues at Bristol lately. He has failed to crack the top 10 in six of his last seven starts at the track, including four straight. During the stretch, Stewart has finished outside the top 15 five times. The defending champ has three wins in 2012, but he probably won’t be adding to that total this weekend.
