2012 Ford EcoBoost 400 Picks: Betting on Underdogs for Big Payoffs

2012 Ford EcoBoost 400 Picks: Betting on Underdogs for Big Payoffs: The 2012 Sprint Cup season comes to close this weekend, and for bettors, this is one last chance to hit it big with an upset winner. Over the years, the season finale has produced its share of surprise winners. From Tony Stewart going to Victory Lane as a rookie to veterans Bobby Labonte and Bill Elliott winning well past their prime, there have been plenty of unexpected drivers celebrating alongside the series champ at Homestead. With that in mind, here are a few underdogs that could hit it big for bettors this weekend.

Auto Racing

It has been a disappointing year for Kevin Harvick, but given his past success at Homestead, he is underrated at his current 20/1 odds. He has made 11 starts at the track, and he has finished in the top 10 in nine of those starts. Harvick also had five top-five finishes at Homestead, and his 7.9 average finish is the second best in the series. He has been even better at the track in recent years, compiling a 4.0 average finish in his last four starts and finishing third or better three times during the stretch. If his strong numbers at the track weren’t enough, he also has some momentum on his side. Harvick won for the first time in 44 races last weekend at Phoenix, and after going more than a year without winning a race, he could make it two wins in a row to end 2012.

The 2012 season was looking like a complete disaster for Kurt Busch, but a late-season move to Furniture Row Racing has given him new life. He enters the season finale at Homestead having finished in the top 15 in three straight starts, including back-to-back top-10 finishes. Keep in mind that Busch has managed just four top-10s all season, and two of those have come in his five races with his new team. His career record at Homestead is a bit up and down, but he is a former winner at the track and has two top-five finishes in his last five starts. He is far from a sure thing, but Busch has been running better than he has all season and is heading to a track where he has been to Victory Lane. At his current 66/1 odds, he could be a steal.

He has one more chance to get to Victory Lane in his first full season in the Cup Series, and Aric Almirola might just be able to get the job done this weekend at Homestead. After all, he has finished as high as fourth at the track and enters the race with plenty of momentum. Almirola has finished in the top 20 in six of his last seven races, including three straight finishes of 16th or better. He is a 150/1 longshot to win this weekend, and while he deserves to be a longshot, he has enough upside given the substantial payoff. Almirola is running better than he ever has in his career, and he is heading to a track where he managed a top-five finish when he was a far-less experienced driver. If he has a chance at pulling off an upset, there is no better track on the schedule than Homestead.
