Unlike most sports, NASCAR’s most prestigious race is also its season opener, rather than its finale. Sunday will mark the 54th running of the Daytona 500, and it is the one race that every driver wants to win. A victory in the Daytona 500 solidifies a driver’s place in the history of the sport, and the only position that matters at the end of the day is first.

Last season, rookie Trevor Bayne delivered one of the biggest upsets in NASCAR history, winning the Daytona 500 in his first attempt and only his second-career Cup start. Bayne’s victory was proof that it doesn’t always take a ton of experience to win, and sometimes, being in the right place at the right time is all that matters.

The Favorites – 2012 Daytona 500 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

After a strong showing in last weekend’s Budweiser Shootout, Kurt Busch put to rest any fears that he can contend at Daytona with his new race team. His 14.4 average finish at the track since the start of 2002 is the best in the series, and he has been even better in recent years. Busch has seven top-10 finishes, including five top-fives, in his last nine starts at Daytona. Not to mention the fact he has finished second in the Daytona 500 three times in his career.

Roush Fenway Racing teammates Carl Edwards and Matt Kenseth have both mastered Daytona in recent years. Kenseth has five finishes of eighth or better in his last seven starts at the track, including a win in the 2009 Daytona 500. Meanwhile, Edwards has four top-10 finishes in his last five starts, including a second-place run in last year’s opener. Look for the teammates to be in the mix in the closing laps Sunday.

The Dark Horses – 2012 Daytona 500 Lines, Preview and Expert Picks

He may look lost at times on oval tracks, but Juan Pablo Montoya has been more than comfortable with the high speeds at Daytona. He has four top-10 finishes in his last five starts at the track, including finishes of sixth and ninth last year. Montoya has the fourth-best driver rating at restrictor-plate tracks since the start of the 2010 season, and there is no denying that he has a feel for the draft. His Earnhardt Ganassi Racing teammate Jamie McMurray came out of nowhere to win the Daytona 500 in 2010, and Montoya could do the same in 2012.

Kevin Harvick already has a Daytona 500 win under his belt from 2007, and he has remained one of the top plate drivers in the series. He has finished seventh or better in three of his last four starts at Daytona, including winning the fall race in 2010. During the two-year stretch, Harvick has the second-best driver rating and has led the most laps at the track. He is a master of the draft, and he always seems to find a way to get to the front when it matters most.

Sleeper Specials – 2012 Daytona 500 Vegas Odds, Expert Predictions and Free Picks

Sunday’s race may be his only Cup start of the year, but it could be a big one for Elliott Sadler. He landed a ride with Richard Childress Racing for the Daytona 500, and the organization has dominated superspeedway racing the last two seasons. More importantly, his 15.6 average finish at Daytona is the sixth best in the series, and he has finished seventh or better seven times in 18 starts during the stretch.

Another RCR driver that could make some noise Sunday is Paul Menard. Last season was his first with the organization, and he responded with a pair of top-10 finishes at Daytona. With another year of his experience under his belt, Menard could take the next step this weekend and contend for the win.

Drivers to Avoid – 2012 Daytona 500 Betting Odds, Predictions and Free NASCAR Picks

In 2008, Ryan Newman won the Daytona 500. Since the victory, he has been terrible at the track. Newman has seven straight finishes of 20th or worse, finishing outside the top 25 four times during the stretch. Despite being a former Daytona 500 winner, Newman is anything but a sure thing in this weekend’s season opener.

He won the Daytona 500 in 2006 and has won five series titles, but Jimmie Johnson’s numbers at the track lately have been anything but elite. He has seven finishes of 20th or worse in his last eight starts at Daytona, and he has finished outside the top 25 three times in his last four starts. Johnson will do his share of winning in 2012, but he probably won’t be making a trip to Victory Lane this Sunday.
