While most drivers probably dread visiting Daytona International Speedway, bettors have to love to see the 2.5-mile superspeedway takes it turn on the schedule. After all, the track is the most unpredictable in the series with a history of producing upset winners. Heck, two of the last three winners at the track have been first-time winners in the Cup Series. If there was ever a week to pick a few longshots at go for a big payoff, it is this Saturday night Daytona.

One of those aforementioned upsets took place at the track last July when David Ragan grabbed the lead late and held of big names like Jeff Gordon and Kyle Busch to win the race. It was the first Cup victory of Ragan’s career, and although it ultimately wasn’t enough to save his job at Roush Fenway Racing, it was one of the bigger surprises of the 2011 season.

Earlier this season, the big names took their turn in the spotlight. Matt Kenseth held on for his second-career Daytona 500 victory, edging another former Daytona 500 winner in Dale Earnhardt Jr. The race was postponed a day because of rain and then pushed until Monday night because of more rain. A bizarre crash involving Juan Pablo Montoya and a jet dryer then caused a lengthy in-race delay. When it was finally over, Kenseth was standing in Victory Lane.

The Favorites – 2012 Coke Zero 400 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

Coming off his second career Daytona 500 victory earlier this year, Matt Kenseth has his sights set on a season sweep at Daytona this weekend. He finished second at the track in the July race last season and has finished eighth or better in seven of his last 10 starts. Kenseth has two wins and a second-place finish at Daytona since the start of the 2009 season, making him the only driver with multiple wins during the stretch.

He is one of the most-decorated restrictor-plate track drivers in NASCAR history, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. will try to add another win to his resume this weekend. He finished second in the Daytona 500 to open the year, and he has finished fourth or better three times in his last five starts at the track. It is only a matter of time before he notches the eighth plate track victory of his career.

In his last five starts at Daytona, Kevin Harvick has a win and three seventh-place finishes. During the stretch, no driver has a better driver rating or has led more laps than Harvick. He has consistently been one of the strongest cars at Daytona in every race since the start of the 2010 season, and while the finishes are always unpredictable, there is a good chance Harvick will be one of the major players for the win.

The Dark Horses – 2012 Coke Zero 400 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

Mired in a 50-race winless streak and squabbling with his crew chief, a trip to Daytona could be just what the doctor ordered for Carl Edwards. His 10.9 average finish in the last 10 races at the track is the best in the series, and he has finished in the top 10 seven times during the stretch. Edwards has never won at Daytona, but he does have a pair of second-place runs. More importantly, he always seems to be near the front.

Although the Daytona 500 has eluded him despite some very strong cars, Kyle Busch has won the July race at Daytona and was wrecked a few hundred yards from the finish line in his bid to win the race a second time. Busch owns the third-best driver rating at Daytona since the start of the 2010 season, and he always seems to have a car capable of contending for the win. How the finish sorts out is always a mystery at a plate race, but Busch should be one of the major players in deciding the outcome.

Sleeper Specials – 2012 Coke Zero 400 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

Most weeks, Paul Menard is an afterthought for bettors and rightfully so. However, Daytona is one of the few exceptions. Menard has been on a tear at the track lately, logging three straight top-10 finishes at the 2.5-mile superspeedway. More importantly, he keeps getting better. He finished ninth in the 2011 Daytona 500, eighth in the July race last season and sixth in this year’s Daytona 500. If the trend continues, a win isn’t out of the question.

His move to Phoenix Racing has made life difficult for Kurt Busch, but the restrictor-plate tracks level the playing field between the powerhouse teams and the single-car operations. Not to mention the fact that Busch is one of the top plate drivers in the series. His 11.2 average finish in the last 10 races at Daytona is the second best in the series, and Busch has five top-five finishes during the stretch. Busch still has the talent to win, and at a track like Daytona, he has a chance to show his stuff.

Big Name to Avoid – 2012 Coke Zero 400 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

There is no doubt that Jimmie Johnson is the top driver in the Cup Series today, but even he has some weaknesses. Daytona appears to be one of those, and his 24.8 average finish in his last 10 starts at the track backs that up. Johnson has eight finishes of 20th or worse at Daytona during the stretch, including five straight finishes of 20th or worse. Bettors need to stay away from the five-time champ this weekend.
