Auto Racing

While there have been some memorable finish at Auto Club Speedway over the years, the 2.0-mile track in Fontana, California doesn’t exactly have a reputation of being one of the most exciting. The wide racing surface has multiple grooves, allowing drivers to pass comfortably. As a result, there tend to be few cautions, and drivers with clean air can pull away from the pack during long green flag stretches. It may not be the most fan-friendly brand of racing, but ACS is a bettors dream. A select group of drivers have dominated the track, and there tends to be few of the unwelcomed surprises that give bettors headaches at other tracks.

Last year, Kyle Busch dominated for most of the afternoon and appeared headed to his second-career victory at Auto Club Speedway. He led 151 of the 200 laps and was out front with less than 10 laps to go. However, Jimmie Johnson ran down and passed Busch with four laps to go, only to have Kevin Harvick bump his way by coming to the checkered flag. Harvick led just one lap all afternoon, but it was the right lap.

The Favorites – 2012 Auto Club 400 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

Fresh of winning an appeal that puts crew chief Chad Knaus back atop his pit box, Jimmie Johnson gets to head to one of his favorite tracks. His 5.1 average finish is by far the best in the series, and he has five career victories at the track. Johnson has finished third or better in four straight starts at ACS and has eight top-three efforts in his last nine starts.

He is one fire to start the 2012 season, and Matt Kenseth should continue to roll at ACS this weekend. In his last 12 starts at the track, he has finished seventh or better 10 times. More importantly, Kenseth has made three trips to Victory Lane during the stretch. As strong as he has looked this year, win No. 4 in Fontana could come Sunday.

His victory at Auto Club Speedway last season was part of Kevin Harvick’s steady improvement at the 2.0-mile track. The victory was his fourth straight top-10 at ACS, and his second finish of second or better in his last three starts. Overall, Harvick has six top-10s in his last seven starts in Fontana, and it has clearly become one of his favorite stops on the schedule.

The Dark Horses – 2012 Auto Club 400 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

Auto Club Speedway was always one of Tony Stewart’s worst tracks on the schedule until his recent move to Stewart-Haas Racing. Since becoming an owner/driver for SHR, he has been on a tear at ACS. Stewart has finished in the top 15 in all five starts at the track with his new team. During the stretch, he has four top-10 finishes, including a win in 2010. The defending champ could make some noise this weekend.

Despite giving away a win at ACS in the closing laps last season, there is a good chance Kyle Busch will be in position to win at the track again this weekend. In his last 12 starts at the 2.0-mile track, he has piled up nine top-10 finishes. Busch has five finishes of fourth or better during the stretch, and after leading more than 75 percent of the laps in last year’s race, his rough start to 2012 could end in a big way Sunday.

Sleeper Specials – 2012 Auto Club 400 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

Four races into his first season with Michael Waltrip Racing, Clint Bowyer is sitting a solid eighth in the standings. The fast start could continue this weekend at ACS, where he has finished in the top 10 in his last four starts. Overall, Bowyer’s 10.6 average finish at the track is the fourth-best in the series, and the only thing missing from his resume is a win. After a second-place run in the fall of 2010, it is likely only a matter of time before he gets the monkey off his back.

Although he is only driving part-time in 2012, Mark Martin is still a threat to win races when he is in the field. In fact, he currently sits 16th in the standings despite sitting out last weekend’s race. Martin has finished sixth or better in three of his last four starts at Auto Club Speedway, and the ageless wonder could turn back the clock this weekend and grab a win.

Drivers to Avoid – 2012 Auto Club 400 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

He is coming off a win at Bristol last weekend, but back-to-back victories could be tough for Brad Keselowski to come by. In three starts at Auto Club Speedway, he has yet to crack the top 20. Granted, he should only get better at the track as he continues to improve as a driver, but Keselowski isn’t ready to contend in Fontana just yet.

The good news for Kasey Kahne is that he is a former winner at Auto Club Speedway, and he has finished in the top 10 in his last two starts at the track. However, his move to Hendrick Motorsports this season has been nothing short of a disaster. Kahne currently sits 32nd in the standings, and he is clearly putting too much pressure on himself to live up to expectations with his new team. Kahne’s problem is more mental than anything else, but until he figures out how to adjust to life with HMS, bettors might as well forget about him.
