Auto Racing

Atlanta Motor Speedway has always been a favorite of drivers and fans. The 1.5-mile track has some of the highest speeds on the schedule, and the racing surface is one giant groove. Drivers can run anywhere on the track, and side-by-side racing and even three-wide racing can be pulled of relatively comfortably. Occasional tire issues have caused havoc, but for the most part, Atlanta produces an exciting, competitive race.

Last year, Jeff Gordon delivered a dominating performance on his way to the win. He led a race-high 146 laps and held off Jimmie Johnson and Tony Stewart in the final laps to secure the win. At the time, it was Gordon’s 85th career win, moving into sole possession of third on the all-time wins list. Matt Kenseth was the only other driver to spend a significant amount of time out front, but his car faded in the second half of the race.

The Favorites – 2012 Advocare 500 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

No driver has been as consistently competitive at Atlanta as Tony Stewart. His 7.8 average finish in the last 20 races at the track is by far the best in the series, and he Has 15 top-10s and 10 top-five finishes during the stretch. Stewart is a three-time winner at Atlanta, and he has finished first and third in his last two starts at the track. The numbers say he should definitely be a factor this weekend.

His 10.0 average finish in the last 20 races at Atlanta is the second-best in the series, and Jimmie Johnson has a way of being at the front of the field when it counts. He is a three-time winner at the track, and he has finished third or better on 10 occasions. Johnson has finished third and second in his last two Atlanta starts, and it is only a matter of time before he cashes in on another trip to Victory Lane.

The Dark Horses – 2012 Advocare 500 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

It has been a frustrating year for last year’s championship runner-up Carl Edwards, but a trip to Atlanta could allow him to end his winless drought. In 14 starts at the track, he has finished seventh or better 10 times. More importantly, he has eight top-five finishes, including three wins. Edwards has finished second and fifth in his last two starts at Atlanta, and it is one track where he always seems to run well.

Despite plenty of bad luck this season, Jeff Gordon has plenty of reasons to be optimistic this weekend. In his last 20 starts at the track, he has 14 top-10 finishes, including 10 finishes of sixth or better.  More importantly, Gordon is the defending winner of this weekend’s race, and he dominated the field at Atlanta last year.

While he hasn’t been the most consistent driver at Atlanta, there is no denying Kasey Kahne’s potential this weekend. He is a two-time winner at the track, and he has six top-five finishes overall. Not to mention that Kahne is one of the best in the series at 1.5-mile tracks. Of his 14 career Cup wins, seven of them have come at 1.5-mile tracks, including a win earlier this year at Charlotte. Don’t be surprised if Kahne is a major factor this weekend.

Sleeper Specials – 2012 Advocare 500 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

He has quietly been on fire the past month, and Marcos Ambrose could be surprise contender this weekend at Atlanta. He does have two finishes of 11th or better at the track in his last three starts, but it are his recent performances that should have the attention of bettors. Ambrose has four straight top-10s, including three straight top-five finishes. It has been the best stretch of his career at the Cup level, and the momentum might just carry him to an upset at Atlanta.

Life at Phoenix Racing has been rough on Kurt Busch, but his numbers at Atlanta are too good to completely ignore. He is a two-time winner at the track, and he has finished sixth or better in five of his last six starts. Busch has a 3.7 average finish in his last three starts at Atlanta, including a win in 2010. This might be one of the few tracks where he can still be competitive despite driving for a small team.

Big Name to Avoid – 2012 Advocare 500 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

Joe Gibbs Racing has had a ton of success at Atlanta Motor Speedway and has sent several different drivers to Victory Lane. Joey Logano has not been one of them. In fact, he has been awful at the track. Logano has a 27.6 average finish in five career starts, and he has never cracked the top 20 at the track. At this point, a top-15 would be a victory for Logano.
