While the Cup Series makes two stops at Talladega Superspeedway each year, this weekend’s race is the only stop at NASCAR’s biggest track for the Nationwide Series. As a result, the race has become one of the more coveted events on the series schedule. It has also played host to some of the biggest wrecks in the series, making it one of the more unpredictable events. Restrictor plates have a way of creating late-race drama, and if the first plate race of 2012 was any indication, there could be a memorable finish in store Saturday. After all, James Buescher was running 11th exiting the final corner on the last lap at Daytona to open the year, when he ended up in Victory Lane as the 10 cars in front of him all wrecked.

Last season’s race produced several lead changes, with Jamie McMurray, Brad Keselowski, Trevor Bayne and Dale Earnhardt Jr. emerging as the dominant cars. The four drivers combined to lead 73 of the 124 laps, with Bayne leading a race-high 23. While these drivers spent the most time out front, it was Kyle Busch that went to Victory Lane thanks to a late charge to the front of the field. With the help of Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Joey Logano, Busch got to the front when it mattered most, leading just four laps in his first-ever win at Talladega in the Nationwide Series.

The Favorites – 2012 Aaron’s 312 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

He is pulling double duty this weekend, and there is a good chance Dale Earnhardt Jr. could deliver a sweep at Talladega. He has finished eighth or better in six of his last seven Nationwide starts at the track, picking up a win during the stretch. Unless he gets caught up in a wreck, Junior will almost certainly be a factor for the win.

In his brief career, Brad Keselowski has already established himself as one of the premier drivers at Talladega. He is a former winner at the track in the Cup Series, and he added a Nationwide win in 2010. Keselowski enters this weekend’s race with three straight top-10 finishes at Talladega, and he has shown no signs of slowing down his winning ways.

Although he has yet to win at Talladega, there is no doubt Joey Logano deserves to be mentioned among the favorites. He has a 2.3 average finish in three career starts at the track, finishing third or better in all three starts. Logano has finished second in each of the last two races at Talladega, and it is only a matter of time before he breaks through and gets to Victory Lane.

The Dark Horses – 2012 Aaron’s 312 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

Shockingly, Kevin Harvick has never won a Nationwide Series event at Talladega despite multiple superspeedway wins at the Cup level. In fact, he started his career with three straight finishes outside the top 15. Harvick has bounced back nicely since then, finishing sixth or better in three of his last four starts at Talladega. He has finished inside the top three twice during the stretch, and he could definitely get the monkey off his back and win this weekend.

It has been checkers or wreckers for Kyle Busch at Talladega in the Nationwide Series. Among his results are three finishes outside the top 30, along with three finishes of fourth or better. Despite the ups and downs, Busch can’t be ruled out this weekend. He happens to be the defending winner of this weekend’s race, and his new race team appears to be hitting its stride. Two wins in two weeks and back-to-back wins are a possibility for Busch.

Sleeper Specials – 2012 Aaron’s 312 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

Despite being a veteran of the Cup Series, Elliott Sadler actually made his first-ever Nationwide Series start at Talladega last season. His debut resulted in a fifth-place finish, and considering he opened this season with a third-place finish at Daytona, it is safe to say that Sadler has a handle on the draft in the Nationwide cars. Having Richard Childress Racing equipment doesn’t hurt his chances either, and the point leader could win for the third time in 2012 this weekend.

Improvement has been the name of the game for Justin Allgaier at Talldega. He has improved his result in all three career starts at the track, finishing a career-best seventh last season. Allgaier is one of the top prospects in the Nationwide Series, and it is no surprise given his talent level that he continues to get better each passing year. He could take the next step this weekend and contend for a superspeedway win.

Drivers to Avoid – 2012 Aaron’s 312 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

He has emerged as the premier Nationwide regular, but Ricky Stenhouse Jr. has been terrible in two starts at Talladega. He has finished 29th and 38th in his two trips to NASCAR’s biggest track, and while he should be able to improve on those results, Stenhouse is a long way from being a contender for a win at the track. It is also worth noting that Roush Fenway Racing has downsized its Nationwide Series operation this season, leaving Stenhouse without any guaranteed drafting help.

His brother once won three straight Nationwide races at Talladega, but Ryan Truex could have some trouble living up to the standards his older brother Martin set. The younger Truex is inexperienced in general, and this weekend’s race will be his first at Talladega in the Nationwide Series. Granted, he does have Joe Gibbs Racing equipment to work with, but elite equipment doesn’t offset inexperience when it comes to handling the draft.
