Bettors hoping for a surprise winner this weekend at Martinsville shouldn’t get their hopes up. After all, the last 14 races at the track have been won by just five drivers, and Jimmie Johnson, Denny Hamlin and Jeff Gordon have combined to win 12 of them. The other two drivers to win during the stretch were Tony Stewart and Kevin Harvick. In other words, Victory Lane has been reserved for only the big names in NASCAR. That probably won’t change this weekend with the playoffs in full swing.

Last fall, Jeff Burton had the car to beat for most of the afternoon, leading a race-high 134 laps. However, the handling of his No. 31 Chevrolet mysteriously went away during the final green flag run. Denny Hamlin took advantage, and after battling an ill-handling car himself early in the afternoon, he stormed to the front in the final 40 laps and completed a Martinsville three-peat.

Earlier this year, Johnson and Hamlin appeared headed to another showdown, but multiple pit strategies left them in the middle of the pack at crunch time. Instead, Kyle Busch seemed poised to grab his first career Martinsville win until Dale Earnhardt Jr. wrestled the lead away from him in the closing laps. However, not even Junior could hang on to the top spot as Kevin Harvick bumped his way by with less than 10 laps to go. Unlike Busch and Junior, Harvick was able to seal the deal and get to Victory Lane.

The Favorites – 2011 TUMS Fast Relief 500 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

His tenure as champ is coming to an end, but Jimmie Johnson is still top dog at Martinsville. He is a six-time winner at the track, and his 5.6 average finish is tops among active drivers. Johnson has finished outside the top 10 only twice in 19 starts at the track, finishing in the top five 13 times.

If anyone can challenge Johnson for Martinsville supremacy, it’s Denny Hamlin. He has finished outside the top 12 only once in 12 career starts, and his 6.6 average finish at the track is the second best in the series. Hamlin is a four-time winner at the track, and more importantly, he has won three of the last four races at Martinsville.

Jeff Gordon has seven career wins at Martinsville, including four since the start of the 2003 season. Not to mention the fact that he has finished in the top five in 13 of his last 14 starts at the track. Whenever the series heads to Martinsville, Gordon has a chance to get to Victory Lane.

The Dark Horses – 2011 TUMS Fast Relief 500 Lines, Preview and Expert Picks

He isn’t known as a flat track specialist, but Kyle Busch has been on the mark in his recent starts at Martinsville. He has three finishes of fourth or better in his last four starts at the track, and he led the most laps at the track earlier this year. Busch has enjoyed the best season of his career at flat tracks, and his first career Martinsville win could be in the works.

There are plenty of fans that would love to see Dale Earnhardt Jr. get to Victory Lane this weekend, and for once, he has a legit chance. Junior has six top-15 finishes in his last seven starts at Martinsville, including a second-place run earlier this year. During his last seven starts, he has five top-10 finishes and a pair of runner-up efforts.

Sleepers Specials – 2011 TUMS Fast Relief 500 Vegas Odds, Expert Predictions and Free Picks

He has four straight top-15 finishes at Martinsville, and Joey Logano’s 13.0 average finish is fifth best among active drivers. He has finished as high as second during the stretch, and he finished sixth in the Chase race last fall. Logano’s Joe Gibbs Racing team has been excellent at the track, and having that info to pull from definitely contributes to his success.

Juan Pablo Montoya is a hit or miss option at Martinsville, but he has finished in the top five in two of his last four starts at the track. More importantly, he has led a good number of laps in the recent races at the track. Montoya may crash his car before he can run 500 laps, but he will probably be near the front if he keeps himself out of trouble.

Big Names to Avoid – 2011 TUMS Fast Relief 500 Betting Odds, Predictions and Free NASCAR Picks

He is a former winner at Martinsville, but Kurt Busch has been borderline awful at the track lately. He has 11 straight finishes outside the top 10 and eight straight finishes outside the top 15. Busch hasn’t even been competitive in recent starts.

In his last seven starts at Martinsville, Greg Biffle has finished outside the top 10 six times. The small slump is part of a career’s worth of struggles at the track. Biffle has a 22.9 average finish in 17 starts, and he has never finished in the top five.
