2011 Indianapolis 500 Odds and Predictions – Indy 500 Favorites and Picks to Win

2011 Indianapolis 500 Vegas Odds, Free Picks and Predictions – Favorites and Drivers to Bet On at Indy 500:The Indianapolis 500 is one of the most historic events in motorsports, and this season will mark the 100th anniversary of the inaugural event. The biggest names in auto racing have participated in the Indy 500, and every open-wheel driver aspires to be the next face added to the Borg Warner trophy and drink the milk in Victory Lane.

Last season, Dario Franchitti got to enjoy both traditions for the second time in his career. The Chip Ganassi Racing driver dominated the race, leading more than 150 laps, and he had just enough fuel to hold off Dan Wheldon in the closing laps. Helio Castroneves was the other major contender, but a mistake in the pits cost him a shot at the win.

The Favorites

Defending Indy 500 winner Dario Franchitti looks poised to make a run at back-to-back victories in the prestigious race. He also won the event in 2007, and he has finished seventh or better in his last five starts at Indianapolis. Not to mention the fact that Franchitti has finished fourth or better in all four races in 2011.

He hasn’t been running that well in 2011, but oval tracks like Indianapolis always seems to bring out the best in Scott Dixon. He won the race in 2008, and he has finished sixth or better in five straight starts at the track. Dixon nearly won the pole for Sunday’s race, and history says he will be at or near the front of the field in the closing laps.

The Dark Horses

It has been a surprisingly quiet year for Helio Castroneves, but he a trip to Indianapolis could be just what the doctor ordered. He won his first two starts in the Indy 500 in 2001 and 2002, and he went on to add a third win in 2009. In 10 career starts at the track, Castroneves has finished in the top 10 on nine occasions.

Just like he did in 2010, Will Power has built up a nice point lead thanks to his road course dominance. However, his lackluster performance on oval tracks last season eventually cost him the title. That being said, Power did finish eighth in his Indy 500 debut last season, and another year of full-time experience in the series can only help his chances.

Sleepers Specials

In each of the last two seasons, Ryan Briscoe has had a car capable of winning the Indianapolis 500. Unfortunately, personal mistakes allowed potential wins to slip away. Despite Briscoe’s failures on the big stage, the fact remains is that he is one of the few drivers that has consistently been in the mix two win at Indy. Plus, he sits fifth in the standings and enters the race coming off back-to-back top-three finishes.

After pulling off a huge upset to win the pole for the Indy 500, Alex Tagliani will try to continue his Cinderella story. He doesn’t have a history of success in the event, but that didn’t stop him from grabbing the pole. Tagliani is a wildcard for sure, but at least he has proven his car is fast.

Big Names to Avoid

Teammates Danica Patrick and Marco Andretti have had a very interesting time at Indianapolis thus far. Both drivers nearly missed qualifying for the race, and there isn’t an explanation as to why the speed for Patrick and Andretti is so far off the pace. While both have had a history of success in the race, including a near win for Andretti, the organization’s struggles thus far are a red flag.
