The Kansas City Royals have opened the 2015 MLB season on fire as they swept a three game home series against the White Sox and then took their act out west on the road with a 4-2 win last night against the Angels. Manager Ned Yost will hand the ball to veteran 36 year-old right-hander Jeremy Guthrie tonight to try and keep KC undefeated. The 6-1, 205 pound native of Roseburg, Oregon went 13-11 with a 4.13 ERA last season for the Royals. He tossed 202.2 innings and allowed 215 hits to go with 124 strikeouts and 49 bases on balls last year in helping Kansas City reach the World Series.
Guthrie doesn’t have great powerful stuff but he does have good control and is a savvy veteran that knows how to get guys out. He’s a solid 33-26 since coming to Kansas City in 2012 and is 3-5 with a 4.43 ERA in 13 appearances including 12 starts against the Angels in his career. He only pitched against the Angles one time last season and he registered a no decision after pitching 6 2/3 innings, allowing 2 earned runs on 8 hits in a Royals 5-4 victory on June 29th, 2014.
Los Angeles Angels manager Mike Scioscia will trot out his ace Jered Weaver to toe the rubber tonight and try and get this three game series with the Royals evened up and avoid falling below .500 on the season. Weaver is 0-1 with a 6.00 ERA on the 2015 season after losing the Angels season opener at Seattle on April 6th. Weaver tossed 6 innings, giving up 8 hits and 4 earned runs in the Angels 4-1 loss.
