2015 MLB Baseball Picks & MLB Predictions: Boston Red Sox @ Philadelphia Phillies Opening Day Preview

Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell will send right-hander Clay Buchholz to the hill Monday afternoon to start opening day as the Red Sox look to turn their fortunes around after going an embarassing 71-91 last season after winning the World Series in 2013. Buchholz will also be looking to bounce back big this season individually as he went 8-11 with a terrible 5.34 ERA last season. The 30 year-old native of Nederland, Texas certainly has more talent than last year’s numbers suggest, as the 6-3, 190 pound hurler had gone 12-1 with a superb 1.74 ERA in helping the Red Sox win their 3rd World Series this century in 2013. Buchholz was pretty solid this spring as he finished spring training with a 2.84 ERA including four scoreless innings in his last outing this past Wednesday against the Minnesota Twins.

Philadelphia Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg will look to get his team to perform better in his 2nd season as manager than they did last season in his first, as the Phillies ended up 73-89 last season. Sandberg will look to get the 2015 season off to the right start as he sends out ace left-hander Cole Hamels to the rubber Monday afternoon. The 31 year-old native of San Diego, California was one of the few bright spots for the Phillies last season as he finished 9-9 but had an outstanding 2.46 ERA. The 6-3, 202 pounder has now registered an ERA of 3.60 or better in his last five seasons for the Phillies. The southpaw struggles this spring with a 5.17 ERA but we don’t put much stock at all in spring training numbers and especially for proven veterans with the talent of Hamels.

We look for this game to be tight and low scoring as both pitchers have the talent to handle both lineups they are facing, although the Red Sox lineup will certainly be a stiffer test for Hamels than the Phillies lineup will be for Buchholz. We are going to place our bets on the Phillies and the UNDER 7.5 on this game Monday afternoon as we feel Hamels is the stronger bet to perform on Monday afternoon as last season’s debacle for Buchholz has us concerned that he may not be ready to get back to his 2014 elite level right off the jump this season.
