2011 Preakness Stakes Odds and Predictions – Favorites and Picks to Win 136th Preakness Stakes

2011 Preakness Stakes Odds, Free Picks and Predictions – Favorites and Lines to Win 136th Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course May 21st, 2011: Early Vegas Betting Odds to Win the 2011 Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland on May 21st are now posted on NSAwins.com and the vegas oddsmakers have made Animal Kingdom the 5/2(+250) early vegas favorite to win the 136th running of the Preakness Stakes. The Preakness Stakes is second leg of the Triple Crown, and it will be held Saturday at Pimlico Race Course is Baltimore. A field of as many as 14 horses will try to tackle the 1 3/16 mile-mile course, including Kentucky Derby Winner Animal Kingdom. The lineup won’t be set in stone until Wednesday’s draw, but a number of top contenders from the Kentucky Derby are expected to run.

Post-position is important in the race because of the track’s tight turns. Horses that start on the outside posts are at a serious disadvantage because the path around the outside of the track is significantly longer. Starting strong out of the gate can allow horses on the outside to get to the inside rail, but in either scenario, extra energy has to be expended. While bettors can start to get an idea of which horses they want to bet on for Saturday, waiting until after the post positions have been determined is recommended.

The Favorites

There isn’t a living Triple Crown winner, but that is no reason to write off Animal Kingdom. After all, the horse won the Kentucky Derby, and there aren’t any newcomers in the Preakness that he hasn’t already beat. Animal Kingdom was the best horse at Churchill Downs, and nothing has happened in the last week for that to change this weekend at Pimlico.

There is some speculation about whether or not Nehro will run in the Preakness, but if he does, the horse becomes an instant contender. He finished second in the Kentucky Derby thanks to a late charge, and the added distance of the Preakness could play to the horse’s strength. Nehro has excellent closing speed, and he could play spoiler this weekend.

Potential Sleepers

Dialed In was favored to win the Kentucky Derby, but the horse just didn’t get it done when it mattered. Still, the horse has three wins in five races, and his entire body of work remains impressive. Dialed In couldn’t deliver as the favorite, but he may be able to get the job done in the Preakness, even with lowered expectations. This is still a talented horse, and now bettors are getting a better payout if he wins.

After a fourth-place finish in the Kentucky Debry, Shackleford remains an interesting option for bettors. The horse just seems to have a knack for being in the mix in every race he runs. Shackleford hasn’t always been able to close the deal, but there is something to be said about picking a horse that has run near the front time and time again. If he cashes in at the Preakness, bettors will want to be a part of it.

In the Kentucky Derby, Mucho Macho Man had enough muscle to finish second to Animal Kingdom. The horse will look to improve one spot this weekend at win the Preakness. Mucho Macho Man posted his best career time in competition at Churchill Downs, and a similar performance at Pimlico could have bettors smiling.

Horses to Avoid

Hopes were high for Midnight Interlude entering the Kentucky Derby, but the horse finished a distant 16th.  Rumor has it that trainer Bob Baffert is going to switch jockeys for the Preakness, but a jockey change might not be enough to transform a horse that was a complete non-factor at Churchill Downs to a contender at Pimlico.

In 2004, Smarty Jones won the Preakness Stakes. Fast forward to 2011, and Smarty Jones’ son Concealed Identity will attempt to repeat his father’s victory. Unfortunately, the horse has been very inconsistent in his previous starts, winning once and finishing fourth or worse three times. Blood lines do count for something in horse racing, but bettors can’t ignore the results on the track either. Concealed Identity doesn’t look like a horse that is a threat to win at Pimlico.
