2017 Week 3 College Football Picks – Clemson @ Louisville Odds & Free Pick 9/16/17

Clemson Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney leads his team on the road Saturday night feeling very confident after the way his team has opened the 2017 college football season. The Tigers enter this game 2-0 overall and 2-0 against the spread after opening with a 56-3 week 1 win over Kent State as a -38 point favorite and then a 14-6 win in week 2 against Auburn as a -6 point favorite. Clemson won both games at home and now take their talents on the road for their ACC opener.

Clemson’s strength so far this 2017 season has been it’s lights out defense. Defensive coordinator Brent Venables has this unit on fire to start the season as they allowed just 120 total yards against Kent State and then came back and shut down Auburn by limiting them to just 117 total yards. The Tigers defense returned 7 starters from last season’s 8th ranked unit nationally and they could have perhaps the best overall defense in the nation this season.

Meanwhile, on offense, Clemson has shown it has talent but it certainly has some work to do. The Tigers struggled last week with only 284 total yards and were limited to just 99 yards rushing against a talented Auburn defense. The Tigers did what they had to do but will certainly need to improve as the season moves along and they will have to eventually win a game or two on their own without relying on the defense to shut every team down.

The Louisville Cardinals come into this primetime showdown Saturday Night looking to show the nation that they are for real this season. Head coach Bobby Petrino has the team off to a 2-0 start but have burned money so far for bettors as they are 0-1-1 against the spread. Louisville opened with a 35-28 road win as a -25.5 point favorite at Purdue in week 1 and then came back last week and won 47-35 at North Carolina as a -12 point favorite. Louisville returns home for their home opener against Clemson.

Louisville’s identity is built around last season’s Heisman Trophy Winner, quarterback Lamar Jackson. Jackson has led the offense to 524 total yards against Purdue and 705 total yards against North Carolina while once again looking like a Heisman favorite. Jackson has a quarterback rating of 160.3 thru two games with 5 touchdown passes, 0 interceptions and 771 yards passing. He’s also been sensational on the ground as he’s rushed for 255 yards and 3 touchdowns. The kid does it all and Clemson will have it’s hands full trying to stop him Saturday night.

On defense, Louisville has been subpar thru two games as Purdue and North Carolina have moved the ball almost at will thru the air. Purdue had 344 yards passing and North Carolina had 401 yards passing. Louisville’s defense returned 7 starters from last season’s 14th ranked unit nationally so the talent is there for them to play much better and they will need to if they have any hopes of competing for the ACC Title this season.

Who are we betting on in the Clemson @ Louisville game? Our money is going down on Louisville +3.5 because of Jackson. Clemson won the game last year 42-36 at home over Louisville but they had Deshaun Watson to answer against Jackson. They don’t have that this season. Give us the home underdog in a raucous stadium with the best player on the field by far. Bet on Louisville to cover the +3.5 spread at Bovada.
