The Clemson Tigers got their 2017 season off to a flying start last Saturday with a dominating 56-3 win over Kent State at home. The Tigers covered the -38 point spread and rolled up 665 yards of total offense doing it. Head coach Dabo Swinney couldn’t have asked for a better performance to start the season.
The Tigers had a balanced attack with 353 rushing yards and 312 passing. The Tigers ground game was unstoppable against Kent and saw 6 players rush for touchdowns. The leading rusher was Travis Etiene who had 81 yards rushing on 8 carried for a touchdown and a long gain of 54 yards.
The Tigers received solid quarterback play from their starter Kelly Bryant in his first game replacing former Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson. The junior Kelly completed 16 passes on 22 attempts for 236 yards and 1 touchdown along with 1 interception. Bryant finished with a whopping 10.7 yards per attempt and ended the game with a 168.7 quarterback rating. It wasn’t a great performance but he showed he could play.
On the defensive side of the ball, Clemson was also dominant. The defense only allowed 120 yards total including 119 on the ground and only 1 yard passing. However, the passing yards allowed is a little misleading as the Tigers weren’t challenged thru the air as Kent State only passed 5 times all game.
The Auburn Tigers also kicked off their season last Saturday with a dominating 41-7 win at home over Georgia Southern. The Tigers pushed on the -34 spread at Bovada. Head coach Gus Malzhan had to be ecstatic with the play from his defense as they allowed just 78 total yards.
The Tigers defense has a chance to be one of the top 10 units in the nation this season with 7 starters back from the unit that finished 7th in scoring and 28th in total defense last season. The Tigers completely shut down Georgia Southern last Saturday as they allowed just 70 yards rushing and 8 yards passing. However, like Clemson, Auburn’s passing defense stats are a little misleading as they too only faced 8 pass attempts against Georgia Southern.
On the flip side of the ball, Auburn did it’s job on offense. The unit finished with 535 total yards on offense against Georgia Southern including 351 yards rushing and 184 passing. The two headed running back tandem of Kam Martin and Kerryon Johnson were unstoppable as Martin finished with 136 yards on 14 attempts and Johnson finished with 136 yards on 16 attempts. Both players scored a touchdown and put the nation on notice that they can be one of the best rushing duos in the nation this season.
Who will cover the spread in this game Saturday? Auburn gave Clemson everything it could handle last season before losing 19-13 at home. This is a revenge game for Auburn and they know they can play with Clemson. Auburn will once again give Clemson all it can handle on Saturday in Death Valley and it won’t be shocking to us to see them win outright. We’re not saying it will happen but we are taking the points with Auburn +6 as they have the dominant defense and rushing game to win a big game like this on the road.
