2017 College Football Bowl Predictions: Birmingham, Armed Forces, Dollar General & Hawaii Bowl

Birmingham Bowl: Texas Tech vs. USF

In a battle of two potent offenses and two dangerous quarterbacks, the Red Raiders will take on the Bulls. Led by Nic Shimonek, who has thrown for 30 touchdowns and more than 3,500 yards, Texas Tech is averaging 34.3 points per game and more than 300 passing yards. South Florida is led by dual-threat quarterback Quinten Flowers, who has thrown for 21 touchdowns while running or nearly 1,000 yards and 10 more scores. On paper, the Bulls appear to have a far superior defense, but the Red Raiders face much tougher competition in the pass-happy Big 12, so I expect this game to be a back-and-forth, high-scoring shootout. I think Flowers is the best offensive weapon for either side in this one, and in the end, I expect him to be the difference. South Florida makes one more play and wins an entertaining contest.

Prediction: USF Bulls (-2) Cover the Spread

Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl: San Diego State vs. Army

Give the Army coaching staff a lot of credit. The Black Knights’ run-dominant, option-based offense might be predictable, but it can be tough to stop. In fact, Army boasts the most potent rushing offense in the country. Quarterback Ahmad Bradshaw leads the way with more than 1,500 yards, and the Black Knights are averaging well over 350 rushing yards per game as a team. On the other side, the Aztecs might boast the best running back in the country. Rashaad Penny has run for more than 2,000 yards and 19 touchdowns this year, and he has topped 200 rushing yards in four straight. Needless to say, you can expect plenty of carries for both teams, but the Aztecs are the more balanced team offensively, and they also own a respectable run defense that is allowing just 110 yards per game. Penny will put up big numbers, and the Aztecs will take care of business.

Prediction: San Diego State Aztecs (-6.5) Cover the Spread

Dollar General Bowl: Toledo vs. Appalachian State

Both sides bring balanced, potent offenses to the party, and both teams have struggled bit when it comes to slowing down the better teams in their respective conferences. Add it up, and I’m expecting both teams to put plenty of points on the board. That being said, the edge in star power definitely goes to the Rockets. Toledo quarterback Logan Woodside has thrown for 3,758 yards and 28 touchdowns compared to just five interceptions. His supporting cast includes running back Terry Swanson, who has run for more than 1,300 yards and receiver Diontae Johnson, who has 13 scores and more than 1,200 yards. Quarterback Taylor Lamb is no slouch for the Mountaineers, but I think the Rockets have to much firepower overall.

Prediction: Toledo Rockets (-7.5) Cover the Spread

Hawaii Bowl: Fresno State vs. Houston

Defense will have a chance to shine in this one, and both the Bulldogs and the Cougars are allowing less than 25 points per game. In fact, Fresno State is allowing just 17.2 points per game and was borderline dominant during Mountain West play. That being said, the Bulldogs were shredded for 40-plus points by both Alabama and Washington, so the unit is far from impenetrable against top competition. On the flip side, Houston has shown the ability to shut down a high-powered offense, holding South Florida to just 24 points. I think the Cougars will come out on top in a defensive struggle.

Prediction: Houston Cougars (-2.5) Cover the Spread
