Odds to Win the 2015 Conference USA Football Championship – Conference USA Football Predictions & Expert Picks

Conference USA “East Division” Prediction

1. Marshall Thundering Herd(+230 odds to win CUSA) – Head coach Doc Holliday has 11 returning starters including 6 on offense and 5 on defense from last season’s outstanding 13-1 Conference USA Champion ball club. However, Holliday will have to replace his super departing quarterback in Rakeem Cato who was responsible for almost 15,000 total yards of offense and 146 touchdowns in his amazing career at Marshall. Junior quarterback Michael Birdsong will be called on to fill Cato’s shoes and help keep Marshall’s explosive offense one of the tops in the nation as it was 3rd nationally in scoring and 2nd in total yards last season. The offense should still be plenty explosive this season thanks to the return of outstanding senior running back Devon Johnson. Johnson rushed for 1767 yards(6th in the nation) on 206 attempts and scored 17 touchdowns last season. Defensively, the Thundering Herd should be sound again as they finished 18th in total scoring and 31st in yards allowed nationally last season. Defensive coordinator Chuck Heater will have to replace last year’s CUSA Defensive Player of the Year in linebacker Neville Hewitt plus last year’s top cornerback Darryl Roberts, but the Thundering Herd do have high hopes for a pair of incoming transfers in junior middle linebacker Shawn Perry from Maryland and sophomore defensive end Blake Keller from Central Florida to help keep Marshall’s defense near the top of the CUSA and amongst the Top 40-50 units nationally. 2015 Projection 9-4, 6-2 CUSA

Conference USA “West Division” Prediction

1. Louisiana Tech Bulldogs(+180 odds to win CUSA) – Head coach Skip Holtz has high hopes in 2015 for an outstanding season as he has 13 returning starters including 7 on offense and 6 on defense from last year’s 9-5 team that finished 7-1 in CUSA action. The Bulldogs had one of the highest scoring offenses in the nation last year as they averaged 37.4 ppg to finish 13th nationally in scoring offense despite only finishing 62nd nationally in total yards with 400.8 ypg. Holtz will have to replace departed starting quarterback Cody Skol who passed for 3436 yards and 30 touchdowns last season and he’ll likely hand over the controls to senior Florida transfer Jeff Driskel. There’s plenty of returning talent at the skill positions including senior running back Kenneth Dixon who rushed for 1299 yards on 253 attempts and scored 22 touchdowns last season. If Driskell can somehow come close to matching Skol’s numbers from last season expect another explosive year for La Tech’s offense. Defensively, La Tech was solid last season finishing 38th in scoring defense and 34th in total defense. The defensive line has three returning starters so expect La Tech to be stout in the trench and allow three new starting linebackers the space needed to be effective. The secondary has three returning starters including both safeties led by junior Xavier Woods who should be an All-American candidate. 2015 Projection 9-5, 6-2 CUSA

5. North Texas Mean Green(2015 Projection 3-9, 2-6 CUSA)
6. UTSA Roadrunners(2015 Projection 2-10, 2-6 CUSA)

2015 Conference USA Football Championship Game

Marshall Thundering Herd vs Louisiana Tech Bulldogs – These two teams don’t play each other in the Conference USA regular season but this will be a rematch from last year’s CUSA Championship Game that Marshall won 26-23. We expect the roles to be reversed this year with La Tech and Skip Holtz breaking thru with a big time win for the CUSA Football Championship. Expect another close battle throughout but La Tech will get it done. La Tech 31 Marshall 30
