2013-14 College Football BCS Picks and Predictions: Potential 2014 BCS Bowl Matchups

NCAA-College-Football-Picks-Odds-and-Predictions2013-14 College Football BCS Picks and Predictions: Potential 2014 BCS Bowl Matchups: The four-team playoff format is waiting to determine college football’s national champion in 2014-15, but in the meantime, we are stuck with one more year of the BCS system and all the automatic bids and conference tie-ins that go along with it. With the start of the 2013 college football season just a few weeks away, it’s time to look into the future and predict which teams will earn spots in the five BCS bowls, including the national title game.

Rose Bowl: Michigan State Spartans vs. Oregon Ducks

Oregon and Stanford are in a class by themselves in the Pac-12, and I think the high-powered offense of the Ducks will flip the script from last year and get the better of Stanford’s defense to ultimately win the conference and secure a Rose Bowl bid. Meanwhile, the Spartans should be able to take advantage of an advantageous schedule, the Big Ten’s best defense and improved quarterback play to earn a BCS bid. Michigan State dodges Ohio State and Wisconsin during the regular season and hosts rival Michigan. I have the Buckeyes winning the Big Ten and playing in the BCS title game, which leaves a Rose Bowl spot open for the Spartans.

Orange Bowl: Florida State Seminoles vs. Louisville Cardinals

It is either FSU or Clemson in the ACC, and I like the potent running game and strong defense of the Seminoles to get the better of Tajh Boyd and the Tigers’ high-powered offense and eventually earn the BCS bid. Meanwhile, the Cardinals might very well be undefeated at this point. Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater is a star, and his supporting cast got better in the offseason. Something tells me that Louisville will find a way to drop a game despite playing in a weak conference, but if Bridgewater stays healthy, the Cardinals will be back in a BCS bowl.

Sugar Bowl: Georgia Bulldogs vs. Boise State Broncos

The Bulldogs got screwed out of a BCS bowl last year because they played in and lost the SEC title game while Florida sat at home and jumped them in the rankings. Don’t expect a repeat in 2013. Quarterback Aaron Murray leads a loaded offense, and since I think Alabama will be back in the BCS title game, Georgia will scoop up the SEC’s other BCS spot. I wouldn’t be shocked at all for their opponent to be BCS buster Boise State. The Broncos are coming off an 11-2 “rebuilding” year and should be even better this season. The matchup would be a rematch of the 2011 season opener for both teams.

Fiesta Bowl: Oklahoma Sooners vs. Stanford Cardinal

Although concerns about Oklahoma’s defense and quarterback Blake Bell are legit, the Sooners have so much talent on the offensive side of the ball that it won’t matter. Oklahoma State figures to be Oklahoma’s main competition, but the Cowboys’ defense is just as suspect. Meanwhile, Stanford will essentially reverse roles with Oregon from a year ago. The Cardinal will fall to the Ducks and miss out on the Rose Bowl, but one loss won’t keep them out of the BCS completely.

BCS National Championship Game: Alabama Crimson Tide vs. Ohio State Buckeyes

Coming off back-to-back national titles, it’s tough to pick against Alabama. With a comfortable schedule by SEC standards and plenty of returning stars, The Crimson Tide should have little trouble running the table. The same can be said for Ohio State. The Big Ten is down right now as a whole, but Urban Meyer has the Buckeyes loaded with talent on both sides of the ball. If OSU doesn’t run the table, something went wrong.
