2012 BCS Bowl Predictions: Predicting Potential BCS Bowl Matchups

2012 College Football BCS Bowl Predictions – Predicting Potential BCS Bowl Matchups: Although a four-team playoff is part of the future of college football, the BCS system will still be in place for the next two seasons. That means that the top programs in the country will once again be fighting for one of the 10 coveted spots in the five BCS bowls. Making a BCS game is huge for a football program not only from a monetary standpoint but from a recruiting standpoint, as well. The best players want to be on the field in the biggest games, and for now, the BCS bowls are the biggest stages in the sport. With that in mind, here is a projection of how this year’s BCS matchups might play out.

2012 BCS Bowl Predictions: Predicting Potential BCS Bowl Matchups

Rose Bowl: Wisconsin Badgers vs. Oregon Ducks

Despite not having the dominating defense of Michigan State or a playmaker like Denard Robinson under center like Michigan, a friendly schedule that includes dodging the Wolverines during the regular season and hosting the Spartans should help the Badgers win the Big Ten once again. Having Montee Ball in the backfield won’t hurt either when they reach the Big Ten title game. Meanwhile, the Ducks should once again overwhelm opponents with their big play speed and Chip Kelly’s spread-option offense. Oregon will likely face USC twice this year, but a split is certainly reasonable, sending the Ducks back to a BCS bowl. These two teams produced an incredibly entertaining Rose Bowl last season, and a rematch would be fun to watch.

Orange Bowl: Florida State Seminoles vs. South Florida Bulls

Florida State’s defense is just too good for the Seminoles to let another ACC title slip away, and somebody has to win the Big East. South Florida returns just about everyone on both sides of the ball from a team that lost almost all its games in heartbreaking fashion last year. For better or worse, this game would be a rematch of a regular season meeting, but conference tie-ins sometimes dictate the matchups. The Seminoles would be heavily favored, but the FSU offense has been known to disappear at times. An upset wouldn’t be out of the question.

Sugar Bowl: Alabama Crimson Tide vs. USC Trojans

Talk about a championship undercard. Alabama has more than enough talent to repeat as champs, but a trip to “Death Valley” to face LSU is going to be tough. USC will likely face a similar test from Oregon, only the Trojans will probably have to take on the Ducks twice. I actually like Matt Barkley and company to take the regular season meeting from Oregon, but I think the Ducks can get some revenge in the Pac-12 title game. One loss will likely keep both Alabama and USC from playing for a title, but a meeting between the two programs would certainly qualify as a battle of college football heavyweights.

Fiesta Bowl: Michigan Wolverines vs. TCU Horned Frogs

A rough schedule will put the Wolverines’ title hopes on hold, but Denard Robinson and company should return to a BCS bowl with just a couple of losses to highly-ranked opponents. TCU has played the role of Cinderella in the BCS before when it was a member of the Mountain West, and the Horned Frogs have the personnel to make a splash in their first year in the Big 12. Quarterback Casey Paschall leads a TCU offense that scored more than 40 points per game last year, and Gary Patterson always seems to field a top-10 defense. Remember the unbelievable shootout TCU and Baylor put on to open last season? Well, this game could be very reminiscent with Robinson playing the role of Robert Griffin III.

BCS National Championship Game: LSU Tigers vs. Oklahoma Sooners

Hosting the Crimson Tide should allow the loaded Tigers to make back-to-back trips to the BCS title game. LSU’s defensive front and secondary are stockpiled with first-round NFL talent, and the power running game should punish opponents thanks to four quality backs and a nasty offensive line. Meanwhile, the Sooners should cruise through the Big 12. With Texas still looking for a quarterback, Baylor losing their Heisman-winning QB, and Oklahoma State losing the electric combo of QB Brandon Weeden and receiver Justin Blackmon, Oklahoma is by far the most-talented team in the conference. Bob Stoops and company should be able to run the table before Stoops ultimately does what he does best – loses in the national title game.
