2011 Wake Forest Football Predictions, Odds, Picks and Schedule – 2011 Demon Deacons NCAA Football Preview

2011 Wake Forest Demon Deacons College Football Expert Predictions, Picks, Vegas Odds and Schedule – Wake Forest NCAA Football Preview: It wasn’t all that long ago that the Wake Forest football program came out of nowhere to win the ACC and earn a trip to the Orange Bowl. After last season’s 3-9 effort that included a nine-game losing streak, it is safe to say that the Demon Deacons have officially come back down to earth. After finishing the year with one of the worst offenses and worst defenses in the nation, it is tough to find a silver lining for Jim Grobe’s bunch. Unless something dramatic happens, the 2011-12 season could be an ugly one.

If there is a silver lining for the Demon Deacons, it is that quarterback Tanner Price and running back Josh Harris have a year of experience under their belts after being thrown to the wolves as freshmen last season. The bad news is that Wake Forest has a long way to go to reach respectability on offense after ranking 91st in the nation in terms of points scored (22.8) and 114th in passing yards per game (143.8) last year.

The ground game was serviceable at times in 2010-11, with Harris piling up 720 yards and seven touchdowns. Considering he averaged almost six yards a carry and will be the centerpiece of the offense this year, he could easily end up topping 1,000 yards in sophomore campaign. Harris will also be the beneficiary of an experienced offensive line. Four starters are back for a unit that helped the Demon Deacons average almost 160 yards per game on the ground last season. If there is a strength for this team, it is the running attack.

Strength was not a word that was associated with the Wake Forest defense. The unit ranked among the bottom 10 nationally, getting torched for almost 36 points per game. As a result of the shortcomings, a new 3-4 base has been installed for this season. The scheme is designed to take advantage of the skills of the Demon Deacons’ two best defensive players – linebacker Kyle Wilber and defensive tackle Nikita Whitlock. Wilber will shift to outside linebacker in order to take advantage of his pass rushing skills. Although just a sophomore, Whitlock will be asked to anchor the defense as the nose tackle.

When a team struggles as much as Wake Forest did a year ago, there is no such thing as an easy matchup. Outside of Gardner-Webb, the Demon Deacons probably won’t be favored in a single game this year. The home slate is particularly rough, featuring games against N.C. State, Florida State, Virginia Tech, Notre Dame, Maryland and Vanderbilt. Road games against North Carolina, Clemson and Boston College aren’t exactly inviting either. Overall, the Demon Deacons have a tough schedule, and they certainly don’t need one.

In the end, the Demon Deacons should improve on offense this season thanks in large part to the running game. That being said, the offense needs to improve by leaps and bounds in 2011-12 in order to compete in the ACC. Meanwhile, an already struggling defense is now going to have to adjust to a completely new scheme. While Wake Forest probably won’t be as bad in terms of yardage and points, the record probably isn’t going to change. Grobe’s team is simply too far behind the rest of the ACC in terms of talent and experience.
