2011 WAC Football Predictions and Free Picks – Odds to Win 2011 Western Athletic Conference Championship

2011 WAC Football Odds, Free Picks and Expert Predictions – WAC Championship Vegas Odds and Vegas Betting Lines: The WAC is one of those conferences that gets little national respect and attention but is still one of those leagues that must not be overlooked by the big boys as the WAC has been known for springing big upsets over the years that have altered the BCS picture. Boise St had been the league’s national face over the past decade and their departure to the Mountain West has certainly created a dent in the overall strength of the league headed into the 2011 season.

However, make no mistake, the WAC still has solid programs like Fresno St, Nevada and Hawaii to keep the league’s profile up and give the league some cache come bowl time. The league has been traditionally scoffed at by many national pundits and fans of BCS schools who felt Boise St’s incredible success over the past handful of years was primarily due to the weak league they played in. Yet, Nevada, Fresno St and even Hawaii have made incredible noise over the years and have sprung huge upsets over BCS schools that leads one to believe that the WAC may be underrated instead of overrated or weak.

Make no mistake, no national championship contender or even BCS bowl game participant will likely be coming out of the WAC anytime soon. However, the WAC can still provide entertaining football for fans to enjoy and enough talent at the top tier for fans of BCS schools to worry about when their favorite teams play a top team from the Western Athletic Conference such as Fresno St, Nevada or Hawaii.

The Favorites – 2011 WAC Football Odds, Predictions and Preview

Even though signal caller and star player Colin Kaepernick left for the NFL, the Nevada Wolf Pack offense should still be one of the more potent attacks around. It is doubtful that Nevada will rank in the top five nationally in 2011-12, but the Wolf Pack should still be able to lead the WAC in total offense thanks to the strength of their ground game. Head coach Chris Ault calls his system the Pistol, and he will have his team gunning their way to a conference title.

Thanks to the best quarterback in the conference, the Hawaii Warriors should be one the top teams in the WAC this season. Bryant Moniz fired 39 touchdowns last season while piling up more than 5,000 yards through the air. The Warriors had the top passing attack in the nation last season, and even without a pair of talented wide receivers, Hawaii’s relentless aerial assault will put up plenty of points. Moniz is the best player in the conference, and he could be the reason the Warriors win the WAC.

Potential Sleepers – 2011 WAC Football Lines, Predictions and Picks

Although Fresno State always seems to be one of the better teams in the conference, it has been more than a decade since the Bulldogs have won the WAC. Big things are expected from quarterback Derek Carr, and yes, he is the younger brother of former Fresno State star David Carr. He will be at the helm of what should be a productive offense, while the defense will be led by a strong front four. The schedule for the Bulldogs is brutal, featuring out-of-conference games against California, Nebraska, Boise State, Ole Miss, and San Diego State. At the very least, Fresno State isn’t going to be overwhelmed by any conference opponent.

It is hard to imagine a team that went 0-8 in WAC play last season could sneak up and win the conference in 2011-12, but San Jose State could do just that. All 11 starters are back on defense, including all-conference safety Duke Ihenacho. The Spartans return a solid offensive line as well, but a lack of talent at the skill positions could lead to a mediocre offense. That being said, San Jose State could make a surprising run at the top spot thanks to one of the best defenses in the conference.

Team to Avoid – 2011 WAC Football Odds, Expert Predictions and Preview

After winning just a single conference game last season, New Mexico State could be in for another long season in 2011-12. The Aggies didn’t just lose last year. They were blown out in a majority of their conference matchups. New Mexico State seems to be perpetually rebuilding, and the Aggies will likely be among the bottom feeders of the WAC once again.
