2011 Uconn Huskies Football Predictions, Odds, Picks and Schedule – 2011 Connecticut NCAA Football Preview

2011 Uconn Huskies College Football Expert Predictions, Picks, Vegas Odds and Schedule – Connecticut NCAA Football Preview: The good news for the Connecticut Huskies is that the 2010-11 season ended with a Big East title and a trip to the Fiesta Bowl. However, the Huskies were dismantled in their bowl game, losing 48-20 to the Oklahoma Sooners. Adding insult to injury, Randy Edsall – the coach that built Connecticut into a Big East power – departed for a job with Maryland. The Huskies do return 17 starters in 2011-12, but repeating as conference champs won’t be easy while breaking in new coach Paul Pasqualoni.

Despite returning more starters than any other team in the Big East, the Huskies have to replace starters at quarterback and running back. The QB battle figures to be a complete mess with four players gunning for the starting job. All four options have little to no in-game experience at the college level, and the potential for a game of musical quarterbacks is developing. In an ideal world, one player would emerge as a stabilizing force under center. However, the Huskies could be looking at a year of inconsistent play from their signal callers and all the problems that can bring. The lone bright spot is that Connecticut does have experienced options at receiver returning.

At least Connecticut has a proven replacement form running back Jordan Todman. Former USC Trojan D.J. Shoemate is ready to step in as the primary back. Pasqualoni figures to install a run-heavy offense, which should mean plenty of work and touches for Shoemate. With the question marks at quarterback, Shoemate may end up being the most important player for the Huskies this season. At the very least, the offense should be centered around Shoemate.

The Connecticut defense was average last season when compared to the rest of the Big East programs, but the unit has a chance to improve with eight starters back. The Huskies are thin at linebacker, but they do have a very experienced secondary. The Big East doesn’t have a ton of dominating offenses, but the top scoring attacks can put up plenty of points. If the Huskies make a major leap on defense, it will only help their chances. However, the defensive side of the ball shouldn’t be a major weakness either way.

Looking at the out-of-conference schedule, the Huskies will likely be either 3-2 or 4-1 heading into Big East play, depending on how games against Vanderbilt and Iowa State turn out. The schedule in a conference as weak as the Big East can’t exactly be considered brutal, but the Huskies do have to go on the road for almost every big game. Connecticut travels to West Virginia, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati this year, and all three of those programs have a chance to compete for the conference crown. The Huskies to get to play South Florida at home, but the Bulls figure to be a major player for the Big East crown as well.

In the end, the Big East is a conference that could be one by up to six different teams. With the talent, or lack thereof, being so close between several programs, playing their main competition on the road will catch up to the Huskies. With a new coach and new faces at a few key skill positions, the conference road games will end up preventing Connecticut from winning another conference title. The Huskies should make a bowl game this year, but a BCS bid is likely going to be out of reach.
