2011 College Football Predictions: Auburn Tigers NCAA Football Predictions, Picks, Odds and Schedule

2011 Auburn Tigers College Football Expert Predictions, Picks, Vegas Odds and Schedule – Auburn Tigers NCAA Football Preview: It’s safe to say that the Auburn Tigers are coming off a pretty good year. After all, they went 14-0, winning the toughest conference in college football and the national title. Their quarterback Cam Newton picked up the Heisman Trophy along the way as well. It was the type of season that coaches, players and fans dream of, but it is also the type of season that leaves nowhere to go but down. Just how far the Tigers fall in 2011-12 remains to be seen.

Even if Auburn returned 21 of its 22 starters this season, the loss of Cam Newton alone would be enough to prevent the Tigers from repeating as champs. After all, the Heisman-winning QB accounted for 50 total touchdowns, including 20 scores on the ground where the Tigers outgained opponents by more than 150 yards. Newton’s size and athleticism made him borderline unstoppable at times, and he more or less won games by himself at times. Plain and simple, Auburn won the national title because of the play of Cam Newton.

Barrett Trotter will likely be charged with the unenviable task of following Newton under center, but true freshman Kiehl Frazier could eventually grab the reins if Trotter struggles. Whoever takes the snaps will be doing so behind a rebuilt offensive with inexperienced wide receivers on the outside. That’s not to say there aren’t talented players stepping into those positions, but experience counts for a lot in a conference as stacked as the SEC, and a majority of the Auburn offense is far from game tested.

The shining star of the revamped attack will be running back Michael Dyer. After cracking 1,000 yards as a freshman, the Tigers’ main back will be leaned on heavily this year. He will somewhat be at the mercy of his offensive line, but Dyer showed plenty of explosiveness during Auburn’s run to the BCS crown. Whatever this year’s team is able to accomplish, Dyer figures to be at the center of it.

On defense, rebuilding is once again the key word. Mammoth defensive tackle Nick Fairley is no longer plugging up the middle of the Auburn defense, but the front seven remains a physical, athletic group for the most part. The secondary is a different story. The Tigers gave up more yards through the air than any other team in the SEC last year, and Newton is no longer around to bail them out. The secret is out, and the opponents are going to attack the porous secondary early and often in 2011-12.

Breaking down the schedule, the news only gets worse for the Tigers. Road games at South Carolina, Arkansas and LSU all loom large. The Gamecocks and Razorbacks will likely shred the Tigers through the air, while LSU’s defense will probably shut down the Tigers’ inexperienced offense. A home matchup against Alabama seems equally unwinnable, and games against Florida, Georgia and even Mississippi State could spell trouble.

The good news for Auburn is that this year’s recruiting class was ranked among the five best in the country. Unfortunately, it is going to take a year or two for those players to adjust to life in the SEC. In the meantime, the rest of the conference is going to out to avenge losses suffered at the hands of Cam Newton and company last season. This year’s Tigers better be prepared to take some lumps.
