2017 NCAA Tournament Bracketology Bubble Teams – 3 Bubble Teams that’s Stock is Going Up: The 2017 NCAA Tournament is just a few weeks away from getting started and the pressure is mounting for the so-called “Bubble Teams” that are currently jockeying for position and trying to bolster their at-large bid resumes for the NCAA Tournament selection committee when they decide who makes the field of 68 next month. There are still more than a handful of teams in our latest 2017 Bracketology Picks and Predictions post that still have work to do in order to feel really comfortable heading into next month’s conference tournaments as well as on selection sunday. Today we will focus on 3 teams currently “IN” our bracket that have their NCAA Tournament “Stock” go up recently with strong play and big resume building wins.

Providence Friars(17-11 overall, 7-8 Big East, RPI 53) – Head coach Ed Cooley has done a remarkable job getting the Friars back in contention to make the field of 68 after being left for dead just a couple weeks ago. This was supposed to be a rebuilding year for the Friars after losing Kris Dunn and Ben Bentil from last year’s squad but they find themselves in very good position to make another NCAA Tournament if they can continue their recent hot surge. The Friars have reeled off three straight RPI Top 50 wins over Butler, Xavier and Creighton and now have 5 wins over RPI Top 50 teams including 2 over RPI Top 25 teams. Their last three regular season games are all winnable against Marquette(RPI 69), DePaul(RPI 222) and at St John’s(RPI 121). The Friars go 3-0 and they should get IN and will definitely get IN if they go 3-0 and win their first Big East Tournament game. However, a bad loss to DePaul or St John’s will probably kill their chances.

Syracuse Orange(17-12 overall, 9-7 ACC, RPI 75) – Everyone left Syracuse and head coach Jim Boeheim for dead before ACC play started as the Orange were downright awful in their non-conference schedule with only one quality win over Monmouth(RPI 48) and losses against South Carolina, Georgetown, Wisconsin, UConn and St John’s. However, times have changed and Syracuse has built up a strong resume to get in the field of 68 despite having a horrible RPI of 75. Syracuse’s win at home over Duke last night probably clinched their at-large bid as it’s awfully tough to keep them out now that they own 6 RPI Top 50 wins including 3 over RPI Top 25 teams(12 Duke, 13 Florida State, 20 Virginia). Syracuse closes their ACC regular season at Louisville(RPI 4) and at Georgia Tech(RPI 86) so they can remove all doubt by at least splitting their final two ACC games. If they somehow go 0-2 then all bets are off and they probably will have to win at least one ACC Tournament game to get in.

Michigan Wolverines(18-10 overall, 8-7 Big Ten, RPI 50) – Head coach John Beilein has his Michigan Wolverines closing with a flourish and in great shape to get back to the NCAA Tournament after missing out last season. The Wolverines are winners in four of their last five games including notching two victories over RPI Top 50 teams in wins over Wisconsin(RPI 24) and Michigan State(RPI 43). Michigan’s at-large bid resume now has 3 wins over RPI Top 50 teams including 2 over RPI Top 25 teams and 9 wins overall against RPI Top 100 teams. Michigan still has a couple more oppurtunities to bolster their resume with games coming up against RPI Top 50 teams with Purdue(RPI 17) at home and at Northwestern(RPI 42). Michigan closes out the Big Ten regular season at Nebraska(RPI 72). If Michigan can go 2-1 or better in these final three games they will definitely get IN but they’ll have to probably win at least one Big Ten Tournament game if they go 1-2. They simply can’t afford to close out 0-3 so they still have to close out strong but they have put themselves in great shape.
