Mountain West Conference Tournament Favorites

Nevada Wolf Pack(25-6 overall, 14-4 in Mountain West) – Nevada head coach Eric Musselman continues to build his resume for a bigger job in the future as he backed up his debut season record of 24-14 with a tremendous 25-6 season this year including winning the Mountain West regular season title. Nevada outlasted Colorado State to win the league by one game and Nevada is in excellent position to nab a NCAA Tournament at-large bid if it somehow doesn’t win the Mountain West Tournament this week as they have a RPI rating of 35 today. Of course, the selection committee could use Nevada’s lack of RPI Top 50 wins as an excuse to keep them out as Nevada was 0-1 against RPI Top 50 teams in the regular season. Those lack of big resume wins puts the pressure on Musselman to lead Nevada to the Mountain West Tournament title this week to secure the automatic bid and give Nevada it’s first Mountain West Conference Tournament Championship in school history.

San Diego State(17-13 overall, 9-9 in Mountain West) – San Diego State has been the team to beat in the Mountain West for a long time but they suffered thru an unusually mediocre season this year under head coach Steve Fisher. The Aztecs struggled to a 9-9 Mountain West regular season record and ended up finishing in 6th place. San Diego State knows they have to win the Mountain West Tournament to make the 2017 NCAA Tournament and they will be looking to get back to the Championship Game for the 4th year in a row. However, despite making the Mountain West Tournament final the last three years the Aztecs have failed to win the Championship Game all three times and haven’t won the Mountain West Tournament since 2011 despite arguably being the best team in the league overall the last five years.

2017 Mountain West Tournament Prediction: Nevada to win Nevada has been the best team by far this season in the Mountain West and we see no reason to believe they won’t cap off a magical season with their first Mountain West Tournament Championship. Nevada will have a lot of fans rooting them on playing in their home state in Las Vegas and we really see no matchup outside of San Diego State that gives us pause to picking them. Our money is on Nevada to get the job done this week.
