Without question, the ninth-ranked Murray State Racers (28-1) are the team to beat in the Ohio Valley tournament. They own victories against Memphis and Saint Mary’s out of conference and lost just a single game during league play. With star point guard Isaiah Canaan leading a high-powered offense, the Racers superior athletes have been too much for conference foes to handle all season long. Canaan is shooting a ridiculous 48.4 percent from beyond the arc and averaging almost 20 points, and if the Racers play anywhere close to their potential, they should steamroll to the tournament crown.

The Dark Horses – 2012 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament Odds, Predictions and Expert Picks

Outside of Murray State, the biggest threat to win the Ohio Valley tournament has to be the Tennessee State Tigers (19-11). The Tigers were the only team to defeat the Racers this season, and they also won nine of their last 10 regular season games. Tennessee State is blessed with one of the dominant big men in the conference in Robert Covington. He is averaging 18.1 points and 8.1 rebounds per game, while shooting 52.9 percent from the field. He can control the paint on both ends of the court for the Tigers, and if he has a big tournament, they could end up winning the whole thing.

After pulling off an upset of Louisville in the NCAA tournament last year, the Morehead State Eagles (17-14) took a step back this season. Losing Kenneth Faried to the NBA didn’t help, but despite being miserable on offense, the Eagles have maintained their intensity on the defensive end of the court. Morehead State is allowing less than 62 points per game, and by forcing opponents to play at their methodical pace, the Eagles can keep a lot of games close. For example, they lost by just five points to Tennessee State and just six to Murray State. A stifling defense can make up for a lot of other weaknesses.

Sleeper Special – 2012 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament Odds, Predictions and Expert Picks

They may not have much depth, but the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles (18-14) have the best scoring tandem in the Ohio Valley Conference. Guard Kevin Murphy is averaging a team-best 20.6 points per game, while forward Jud Dilard is averaging 18.0 points to go along with 8.7 rebounds. Together, the two form an inside-outside combo that gives Tennessee Tech’s offense a nice balance. Having just two reliable scorers has caught up with the Golden Eagles at times this year, especially late in games. That being said, Murphy and Dilard have enough ability on the offensive end to make Tennessee Tech dangerous in tournament setting.
