2016 AFC North Division Predictions and Odds to Win
1. Pittsburgh Steelers(+125 odds to win AFC North at Bovada) – Head coach Mike Tomlin welcomes back a very talented Pittsburgh Steelers team that has won 11 and 10 games the past two season and is hungry to take the next step and get back to the Super Bowl. The Steelers were a wild card team last season but bounced the division champion Cincinnati Bengals out of the playoffs in an intense road victory in the Wild Card round before eventually losing to Super Bowl Champion Denver in the AFC Divisional round. The Steelers were severely shorthanded in that loss due to a vicious hit Antonio Brown took in the Bengals playoff win that sidelined him for the Denver game and you can expect the Steelers and Bengals games to be even more intense this season with animosity brewing on both sides. The Steelers are our choice to win the AFC North due to their explosive offense which features the best quarterback in Ben Roethlisberger and wide receiver Antonio Brown in the division. However, defensively is where we expect the Steelers to make a big improvement this season from their 21st total defense last season as they used their first three picks in the first three rounds of the NFL Draft on defense.
2. Cincinnati Bengals(+188 odds to win AFC North at Bovada) – The Cincinnati Bengals are the most frustrating team in the NFL as their talent suggests they should be winning playoff games and competing in Super Bowl but they consistently lay eggs each and every postseason. Had coach Marvin Lewis has turned a laughing stock franchise around in his 13 seasons at the controls as he has led the Bengals to 7 playoff berths and 4 division titles. However, the Bengals have been knocked out in their opening playoff game all 7 times they have reached the playoffs under Lewis and last season’s horrible loss to Pittsburgh at home was the most embrassing yet. This season the Bengals once again have arguably the best talent in the AFC North top to bottom and should once again be one of the best teams in the AFC. However, it all means nothing as you would have to be a fool to pick Cincinnati to do any damage in the postseason under Lewis and quarterback Andy Dalton until they actually do it. Therefore, we can sit here and talk about how explosive the offense will be and how talented the defense should be but we won’t as we simply don’t feel like the mental makeup of this team has changed much for them to carry it over to postseason success.
3. Baltimore Ravens(+285 odds to win AFC North at Bovada) – Head coach Jim Harbaugh and the proud Baltimore Ravens franchise suffered thru one of their worst seasons ever last season as they went 5-11 overall after starting 0-3. The Ravens suffered a lot of injuries last season but should be able to bounce back nicely this year and get back into the wild card hunt at minimum with a chance at winning the division too. The Ravens had 8 picks in the 1st four rounds of the NFL Draft to give themselves a nice infusion of young talent plus added three solid veterans in free agency with the signings of wide receiver Mike Wallace, tight end Benjamin Watson and safety Eric Weddle. Despite going 5-11 overall last season the Ravens managed to finish with the 14th ranked total offense and the 8th ranked total defense in the NFL. That shows us two things: stats can be misleading and the Ravens were as bad as their record suggested. The truth falls somewhere in the middle and we think the Ravens will be a tougher and more talented football team in 2016 and they should be able to get back to their usual dangerous selves come December and January if they get in the playoffs.
4. Cleveland Browns(+3100 odds to win AFC North at Bovada) – The Cleveland Browns have a new head coach in Hue Jackson for the 2016 season after suffering thru yet another humiliating season last year when they finished 3-13. However, despite the new coacing change, not much else should change for the Browns this season as they still will field one of the worst teams in the NFL. The Browns have brought in former Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III to be their new starting quarterback and we can’t help but laugh. Griffin doesn’t have the toughness, leadership or talent to turn this sinking ship around and he has little help to work with at all the skill positions. Defensively, the Browns are just as bad as they finished with the 27th ranked total defense last season and didn’t sign anybody in free agency or draft anyone in the draft that we feel will make a big enough impact to make their defense significantly better. It’s going to be another long season for poor Browns fans.
