2011 NFL Power Rankings and Ratings – Preseason Edition Week 3

Week 2 of the preseason slate has now come and gone and we are now getting a better idea of where some teams are headed this season. This week saw many positions in question get sorted out (see. Kyle Orton and Alex Smith) and many veteran players lose ground to rookies (see. Jimmy Clausen and Pierre Thomas). Cuts are vastly approaching and many players on the bubble will have this third game of the preseason to put everything on the line. There is nothing more scary then a player that has virtually nothing to lose and I expect there to be a lot of shifting in the power rankings after week 3 of the preseason, for now there are a few shifts from last weeks rank.

1. New England Patriots – The Patriots are down right scary through 2 games of preseason play, may they finally be ready to go 19-0? (LW: 1)
2. Green Bay Packers – This year it might be the defense that takes the spotlight on way to another playoff birth. (LW: 3)
3. Baltimore Ravens – This ranking will either hold strong at 3 after the 3rd game or fall dramatically and it all hinges on Joe Flacco. The fourth year pivot needs a good showing to avert serious ridicule as he has looked average at best through 2 games. (LW: 5)
4. New Orleans Saints – Mark Ingram is looking very savvy in the backfield for the Saints and his swagger and charisma might just be the recipe for this Bayou club to get back to the Superbowl. (LW: 4)
5. Philadelphia Eagles – The “dream team” had serious issues on Thursday night against the Steelers and the scrutiny of their billing has been the focal point of NFL talk for the last week. (LW: 2)
6. San Diego Chargers – Impressive showing in Dallas on Sunday night. The Chargers have little to worry about this year in the AFC West. (LW: 7)
7. Pittsburgh Steelers – What a bounce back from their week 1 flop against the Redskins. The defense has every bit of potential to be the best in the league this year. (LW: 10)
8. Detroit Lions – A healthy and stronger Matthew Stafford, a larger and faster Calvin Johnson, the “Silver Crush” along the defensive line, and a revamped linebacking core might just be the remedy for the Lions to return to postseason competition. There running game must come along way however. (LW: 12)
9. Houston Texans – The Texans offense looks great and there defense is rounding into form. If Arian Foster can repeat his 2010 campaign performance then the sky is the limit for this Texans club. (LW: 9)
10. New York Jets – If Plaxico Burress proves to be the all-star receiver he once was for the other New York football club then the Jets could very well be known for taking the best risk/reward front office move in NFL history. (LW: 11)
11. Atlanta Falcons – Once again, this year hinges on the production of Matt Ryan. Week 2 of the preseason slate saw the fourth year pivot struggle and thus the offense too. (LW: 6)
12. Indianapolis Colts – The Colts look extremely vulnerable without their all-world talent under centre. Even with Peyton in the fold, I don’t know if this team has enough to get back to the postseason. (LW: 8)
13. New York Giants – Eli Manning sure backed up his early week statement about being in the same class as Tom Brady. The Giants offense absolutely dominated the Bears for all four quarters. (LW: 13)
14. Dallas Cowboys – They may have the most talent in the entire league but until they can get that talent to work as a cohesive unit then they will continue to be on the outside looking in. (LW: 23)
15. Washington Redskins – The Redskins might be the sleeper of the 2011-2012 season, there defense looks terrific through 2 games of preseason play. (LW: 15)
16. Minnesota Vikings – Donovan looked a little better in his second outing with his new offense and the defense made their old pivot in Tavaris Jackson look silly. (LW: 16)
17. St. Louis Rams – Sam Bradford is the real deal and this Rams offense has looked very lethal through 2 games of play. (LW: 17)
18. Tennessee Titans – Matt Hasselbeck looks almost too comfortable running this offense and the offense stands to only get better when Chris Johnson is lining up behind Matt Hasselbeck. (LW: 14)
19. Arizona Cardinals – Locking up Larry Fitzgerald is reason enough for the rise in the power rankings for this Cardinals club. Kevin Kolb is progressively exercising this offense better and better and Beanie Wells looks exception in the backfield. (LW. 26)
20. Cleveland Browns –Letting the Lions back into the game on Friday night keeps this club in the 20 spot, but they every bit of potential to move into the mid-teens if they can patch up their defensive secondary issues. (LW: 20)
21. Denver Broncos – Now with Kyle Orton named is the week 1 starter the spotlight and scrutiny on the quarterback position can now shine light on the wideouts. The Broncos have concerns on the far right and left and currently are using a cast of unknowns. (LW: 24)
22. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – What a beat down by the New England Patriots! The Buccaneers defense will have to go back to the drawing board this week in anticipation of their final tune up game before the regular season. (LW: 21)
23. Miami Dolphins – With the earlier speculation of Kyle Orton coming to town and the offseason scrutiny over this play, Chad Henne seems to have a fire lit under him and he is responding in a big way. With a productive Henne under centre and an elusive Reggie Bush coming out of the backfield, the Dolphins could have the makings of an excellent offense. (LW: 28)
24. Chicago Bears – Both the offense and defense look brutal through 2 preseason games and Lovie Smith is on the hot seat once again. Lovie Smith could be the first coaching casualty of this season if the Bears fail to perform early. (LW: 19)
25. Oakland Raiders – Picking up Pryor in the third round of the supplemental draft might prove to pay dividends, later on that is. This Raiders club still has a ways to go on their road to respectability. (LW: 25)
26. Carolina Panthers – It looks as though Cam Newton has narrowly won the starting quarterback position on passing alone, wait until Ron Rivera gives the Heisman winner the green lights to run! (LW: 18)
27. Jacksonville Jaguars – Garrard looked solid in first game of the 2011 preseason and it will he his job to lose this season. The defense also significantly picked up their game from preseason week 1 and absolutely shut down the Falcons O. (LW: 27)
28. Seattle Seahawks – The aquistion of Tavaris Jackson to be their starting quarterback is looking more and more ridiculous each game. Another move like this and Carrol might find himself coaching and managing AA college ball. (LW: 22)
29. Buffalo Bills – Lee Evans for a fourth round pick??? Any more ridiculous front office moves like this and the Bills could be playing in Toronto for good sooner, rather then later. (LW: 29)
30. San Francisco 49ers – Two thumbs down to the 49ers fans on Saturday night, but their offense seems to be turning the corner. (LW: 30)
31. Kansas City Chiefs – The Chiefs will be neck and neck with the Bengals all year long for the Andrew Luck sweepstakes. (LW: 31)
32. Cincinnati Bengals – Marvin Lewis might the next one to leave and threaten retiring if the Bengals don’t let him go. (LW: 32)

Thursday Night NFL Preseason Picks: Redskins @ Ravens Odds, Free Picks and Predictions on ESPN

Thursday Night NFL Preseason Picks: Washington Redskins @ Baltimore Ravens 2011 NFL Preseason Vegas Odds, Free Picks, and Expert Predictions on ESPN 8/25/11: Now with Donovan McNabb out of the fold and a newly installed offensive scheme on the horizon, the Washington Redskins believe they have every intention in competing for the NFC East Crown this year. John Beck and Rex Grossman have been splitting snaps this training camp but it is looking more and more likely that Beck will be given the nod come opening day. Beck brings to the table excellent precision, smarts, and leadership qualities, all qualities that has swayed Mike Shannon’s earlier notion of going with Grossman to him. Washington has performed quite admirably in their first two tune-ups and boast a 2-0 record, only surrendering 10 points between the two games. Defense has been the central theme in the preseason and it looks as though it will be this unit called on throughout the 2011 campaign. The Redskins have the best rush defense through 2 preseason tilts, averaging 99 rush yards allowed per contest, and have the fourth stingiest pass defense. The loss of Albert Haynesworth and Andre Carter to the patriots don’t seem to be hurting their defensive line one bit and Brian Orakpo is molding himself into an all-world DE/LB. For any postseason birth to occur for this Redskins football club then the return and continued health of TE Chris Cooley is essential. Cooley is not granted as much consideration and admiration as he should and may very well be the most underrated player in the league. Cooley has excellent technique in the run game and his catching capabilities are next to none.

Joe Flacco knows that he needs to perform better and make more sound adjustments and calls on the field. Through two games of preseason competition the fourth year pivot has looked average at best and average just wont cut it in the AFC North division. The Ravens defense has the potential to be one of the most powerful units in the league, but it all starts with Joe. With receivers Anquan Boldin and Lee Evans, running backs Ray Rice and Vontae Leach, and a savvy veteran O-line, the potential is there for greatness. Joe Flacco’s problem is, and always has been, that he over thinks and often times takes too long to process the field. It is almost that Flacco himself does not believe in his abilities and arm, but when he lets these head games go he is one of the most dominant quarterbacks in the league. The Ravens will once again rest their aspirations this season on the shoulders of their top notch defense, a defense that is one season older and closer to retirement. All-pro’s Ray Lewis and Ed Reed may have one more kick at the bucket before hanging up the cleats and shoulder pads for good, this season will be Super bowl or bust.

Tonight our complimentary selection will be the Ravens and the points in what should be three solid quarters of football for all starters. The defense has dominated the news this preseason for both the Redskins and Ravens and it appears that both clubs are quite content in hinging their seasons on these units. Both offense’s have struggled to this point, but the Ravens do not have an excuse. Flacco and company know they need to execute better and it will be the main objective tonight to score touchdowns rather then settle for 3-pointers. Arguably the hardest competing back in the league, Ray Rice looks forward to testing the strength of the NFC’s most dominant rush defense. Neither John Beck or Rex Grossman have looked solid to this point, I expect both to struggle against one of the leagues best pass defenses. We will consider the Ravens putting some offensive points on the board and letting the defense cruise them to victory in what is the last tune-up outing for all starters. Cheers!

Monday Night NFL Preseason Picks: Chicago Bears @ NY Giants Odds, Free Picks and Predictions on ESPN

Monday Night NFL Preseason Picks: Chicago Bears @ NY Giants 2011 NFL Preseason Vegas Odds, Free Picks, and Expert Predictions on ESPN 8/22/11: The Bears have been focusing on their offensive line all week and believe they may finally have the kinks worked out in time for their second tune up prior to the regular season. The Bears were absolutely manhandled on the offensive line last game against the Buffalo Bills and many were beginning to question the potential of the Windy City O. Mike Martz has publicly stated all week that his offense is fine and the line problems are just the result of new personnel and lack of preparation. On the other side of the ball the Bears looked solid as always and it looks as though it will be the defense called on this year to guide them back to the postseason. The ex-Cowboy tandem of Marian Barber and Roy Williams has done little to impress thus far and must pick up their games in a hurry to avert ridicule. Williams has even publicly stated that he is not in football shape as of yet, which has been a hard pill to swallow for the majority of Bears nation. Going into this regular season the Bears may arguably be the projected 4th club in the highly contested NFC North and they will have to rely on their solid defensively play and timely offense if they have any postseason aspirations.

The Giants may have endured the most grueling of off seasons and appear to be stepping into this season with some serious concerns with their receivers and defensive line. The Giants were stymied offensively by a ball hawking Panthers defense last week, but Eli Manning believes in his offense and feels that it was just the result of the long time off and new personnel growing pains. The loss of Steve Smith and loss of reacquiring Plaxico Burress really showed up in their first tune up last week as Eli Manning had issues finding open receivers. With Osi Umenyiora being shelved for up to a month after undergoing knee surgery last week means the Giants defensively line will have to be even more creative in getting to the ball carrier and quarterback. The Giants have long been known for their excellent play along the defensively line and it will be imperative for this unit to hold their own early in the regular season prior to Osi’s return. Now with the NFC East being the arguable most toughest division in football, the Giants will have to jump out of the gates fast and it all hinges on Eli finding some kind of cohesion with his “no-name” receiving core.

Our complimentary selection in tonight’s second Monday night tilt of the NFL preseason will be the New York Giants and the points. After publicly stating this past week that he deserves consideration in the Brady echelon of quarterbacks, Eli Manning now knows he has to go out and back up that statement. Week 1 of the preseason slate of games saw the Bears and Giants stumble offensively, but play stout defensively. The Bears have serious concerns along their offensively line after the departure of Olen Kreutz as witnessed in their first preseason tilt against the Bills. Cutler was pressured, hurried, and sacked many times in his few series of play and there appears to be no relief in sight. The Giants are a good football club and they have the personnel in place to contend for the NFC East title, even with a revamped Eagles club. I expect Eli Manning to come out firing tonight and he will want to put points up in each of his 2-3 series, anything less and the New York faithful will be up in arms all week. We will consider the Giants silencing their early season critics with an impressive victory in front of their home faithful tonight. Cheers!

Free NFL Preseason Picks: Vikings @ Seahawks Odds, Free Picks and Predictions Saturday Night

Free NFL Preseason Picks: Minnesota Vikings @ Seattle Seahawks 2011 NFL Preseason Vegas Odds, Free Picks, and Expert Predictions Saturday Night 8/20/11: It was quite evident that the long layoff this offseason and huge overhaul of players that the Vikings underwent really effected them. Minnesota lacked rhythm and timing in their loss to the Tennessee Titans last Saturday night, but another week of preseason practice and classroom sessions should have this club ready to go. Donovan McNabb looked decent in his first start as the Vikings pivot, he too looked as though he was out of touch with his receivers and backs. The Vikings are hinging their aspirations this season on McNabb returning to his pro bowl form of years past, a rather large gamble in the eyes of most. McNabb is coming off the most mentally grueling and challenging season of his career but has publicly stated that he is still an elite quarterback in this league and knows he can return to that level. The other catalyst behind any 2011 Minnesota Vikings playoff birth will undoubtedly be running back Adrian Peterson. The Vikings will be returning the majority of their offensive line this season, which should bode well for the leagues top threat out of the backfield. The Vikings are going to do their best to bring Peterson into the regular season healthy and charged, giving him 1 carry as they did in Tennessee might just be the remedy for that. The Vikings future in Christian Ponder looked quite solid in his debut and the callings for him to be under centre might be sooner rather then later if McNabb fails to perform. Ponder ended his debut going 8-13 for 84 yards and had a long strike for 26 yards.

The Seattle Seahawks are taking huge gambles on ex-Vikings QB Tavaris Jackson and WR Sydney Rice, but the Hawks’ feel that these players have the makings and tools to be quite successful in their scheme. Jackson was thrown off the radar when the Vikings landed the services of Brett Favre 2 seasons ago and he has patiently waited for a chance to showcase his skills once again. Prior to the Favre signing, Jackson was a solid quarterback for the Vikings and he gave the Vikings a chance to win in every start he was offered. He is one of those quarterbacks where he doesn’t do any one thing particularly great, but he does everything good. Coming over with Jackson to the west will be his longtime Vikings teammate in Sydney Rice, both will be called on to revamp a rather mundane and opportunistic Seahawks offense. Unlike Jackson, Rice was a focal point of the Vikings offense for the last several years but fell out of favor last season. Rice poses as a large target and he has the speed to stretch the field. To round out this Seahawks offense they brought in Zach Miller from the Raiders to shore up their tight-end position, a dire need this off season. The Seahawks will have every opportunity to repeat their NFC West title this season, but it will be on the shoulders and arm of a rather unproven commodity.

Tonight we will recommend a play on the OVER. The Seahawks and Vikings both have solid offenses that can strike at any point, they also have defenses that love to bring it back the other way. We witnessed last week both starting units struggle out of the gates and it will be a focal point tonight for both clubs offensive coordinators to get their offenses going. Donovan McNabb might be the player that has the most to prove this season, a repeat letdown performance like last year might just about remove him from any hall of fame talk. Now with almost three weeks of prep work under his belt, McNabb might finally be ready to execute this Vikings offense to full capacity tonight against a suspect secondary in the Seahawks. Tavaris Jackson will be treating this game as his mini-Superbowl as he will want to show the Vikings what they gave up on years ago. We will consider the scoring to be early and often tonight at Qwest Field, go with the OVER. Cheers!

2011 NFL Power Rankings and Ratings – Preseason Edition: Patriots Top the List

2011 NFL Power Rankings and Ratings – Preseason Edition: Patriots, Eagles and Packers Top the List: The preseason edition of our 2011 NFL Power Rankings and Ratings is now posted on NSAwins.com below. Please check out our website weekly during the regular season for weekly updated NFL Power Rankings and Ratings in addition to free NFL picks, live vegas NFL odds, NFL game previews and more. Enjoy…

2011 NFL Power Rankings and Ratings – Preseason Edition

Yes, yes, and yes. Although we are only through the first slate of games for week 1 of the preseason, some things can be said about the prospects of each club thus far. The journey to Indy starts when the ball is kicked off in week 1 of the preseason and the praise and scrutiny begin shortly there after. That being said, here is the power rankings after week 1 of the preseason.

1. New England Patriots – If their 2nd and 3rd units can hang up 47 points who knows what the first unit offense can accumulate?
2. Philadelphia Eagles – The “dream” team sure looked sweet early and that defense is next to none.
3. Green Bay Packers – The first team offense and defense came out of the gates slow and mundane, but both units looked in Super Bowl form in their second at bats.
4. New Orleans Saints – Reggie who? The Saints looked solid on both sides of the ball and Mark Ingram’s 14-yard spat might be a sign of things to come.
5. Baltimore Ravens – Take away Mike Vick’s opening touchdown drive and the defense shined, no surprise. Ricky Williams and Lee Evans might be the x-factors to get this club over the hump, or more blunt, the Pittsburgh Steelers.
6. Atlanta Falcons – With Julio Jones in the mix the sky is the limit for this Georgian offense. The defense still needs a little work to be able to compete in December and January.
7. San Diego Chargers – If the Chargers can jump out of the gate fast, which has been an issue in prior seasons, they could have their division wrapped up by late October.
8. Indianapolis Colts – This ranking will improve when Peyton is under centre and not Lions and Texans cast off Dan Orlovsky.
9. Houston Texans – Defense wins championships, but the Houston Texans offense can too.
10. Pittsburgh Steelers – Big Ben and crew looked sloppy and off rhythm against the Redskins and they have yet to find a legitimate second string pivot.
11. New York Jets – Starting units on both sides of the ball looked impressive, but depth may be the falling point with this hyped club this year.
12. Detroit Lions – The restoration of the roar may finally be complete. This team has the makings to challenge the Packers for the NFC North crown in late December.
13. New York Giants – The G-men surely missed Osi on the outside pass rush on Saturday night, but they held their own and looked solid on the offensive side as well.
14. Tennessee Titans – On the outside looking in, this club has no chance in competing for the AFC South crown, but an inside glance reveals another prospect. It is imperative for the Titans brass to get Chris Johnson under wraps before the 2011 regular season slate commences.
15. Washington Redskins – Rex Grossman looked solid, but he is not the answer under centre, neither is John Beck. The defense will be relied on heavily this season and they looked fantastic on Friday night.
16. Minnesota Vikings – The Vikings may suffer the largest set back this season. They looked dazed and confused on both sides of the all against the Titans on Saturday night, hopefully just a bi-product of a long lay off.
17. St. Louis Rams – The Rams will go as far as Sam Bradford will take them and if Saturday night was any inclination then they will be playing in January.
18. Carolina Panthers – Cam Newton looks as though he will be playing as the starter sooner, rather then later. Carolina made a lot of “under the radar” acquisitions this off-season and many should be weary of this club this season.
19. Chicago Bears – Until the offensive line struggles can be patched up they will be a lower echelon football club.
20. Cleveland Browns – If Colt McCoy can be the type of force he once was at the University of Texas and if Peyton Hillis was rekindle his game from last season then there is no reason to believe that this Browns club cant compete for a wildcard birth this season.
21. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Hanging up 25 points on a highly overrated Chiefs football club is not entirely impressive. Josh Freeman and company may have the toughest schedule in recent memory, but they will be competitive.
22. Seattle Seahawks – Pete Carroll is gambling on ex-Vikings Jackson and Rice, but the risk/reward is not significant. The Seahawks will have to rely on their defense and home field advantage to guide them through the 2011 campaign.
23. Dallas Cowboys – The Boys’ still fail to impress and Tony Romo may be the most overrated player in the league. They held their own against the Broncos on Friday night but the starting units are a ways from running on all cylinders.
24. Denver Broncos – John Fox will foster an attitude of accountability and effort throughout the entire organization. Will Tim Tebow be the catalyst behind a playoff birth?
25. Oakland Raiders – One of the more quiet clubs this off-season, the Raiders biggest loss might not be Namdi, but actually tight end Zach Miller.
26. Arizona Cardinals – Larry Fitzgerald will most definitely be gone if Kevin Kolb fails to live up to his billing. There were issues all over the field for Arizona on Friday night and they, too, might see a setback.
27. Jacksonville Jaguars – Blaine Gabbert looked solid, but David Garrard will be the starter come week 1. The defense was torched by the Patriots second and third string units, definitely not a good start.
28. Miami Dolphins – Kyle Orton would have propelled this club into the mid teens in this preliminary power ranking, Chad Henne is just not the answer.
29. Buffalo Bills – Lee Evans for a fourth round pick??? Any more ridiculous front office moves like this and the Bills could be playing in Toronto for good sooner, rather then later.
30. San Francisco 49ers – Jim Harbaugh has his work cut out for him. Not a bad idea to tank this season and pick up Harbaugh’s old pivot in Andrew Luck.
31. Kansas City Chiefs – Arrowhead should be Arrowdead by late September. This club will definitely not be making the postseason like last year.
32. Cincinnati Bengals – Say what you want about Chad Ochocinco, at least he brought fans to the stadium. The Bengals will be a hard team to watch this season.

Monday Night NFL Preseason Picks: NY Jets @ Houston Texans Odds, Free Picks and Predictions on ESPN

Monday Night NFL Preseason Picks: New York Jets @ Houston Texans 2011 NFL Preseason Vegas Odds, Free Picks, and Expert Predictions on ESPN: The Jets have endured one of the more deflating of off season’s as they have lost out on a few big name free agents and have watched a few of their own skip town, even going to rival competition. The losing of the Namdi Asomoguha sweepstakes was a hard one to take for the entire front office of the Jets, they felt they had him in their grasp only to lose him in the last hour to the Philadelphia Eagles. They were severely close to losing Antonio Cromartie, as well, but they worked hard and diligently to bring him back into the fold. Watching the likes of Shaun Ellis and Brad Smith skip over to other AFC East competition was a bit numbing for Rex Ryan and co., but the Jets feel they have the necessary tools in place for another Super Bowl run. The additions of Plaxico Burress and Derrick Mason will be welcome additions to a receiving unit that lacked depth and veteran leadership last season. There is no team more vocal then than the Jets but only time well tell if their talk is worth garnering as the regular season vastly approaches.

The mission statement this year for the Houston Texans will be to build upon last year. The Texans jumped out of the gates quickly last year with an impressive 4-2 start but injuries and inconsistent play rendered them 6-10 at the end of the season slate and out of the AFC postseason once again. The Texans scored big when they landed the services of cornerback Jonathon Josepth in the free agency frenzy. Jospeth, the ex-Bengal, is a dynamic cover corner and he will bring legitimacy to the strong side of the Texans secondary. Defensive coordinator Wade Phillips has a toolbox of weapons he can deploy this season, non more enticing then Mario Williams. The big news of the off-season for the Texans has not been any draft picks or free agent signings, it has been the news that Phillips plans on transforming the Texans defense to a 3-4 and having Mario Williams play weak-side linebacker. The thought of Williams having an extra 3-4 yards to run into the offensive line is scary and Wade Phillips truly believes that he may have the next Lawrence Taylor.

Our complimentary selection for the Monday night clash between the Jets and Texans will be the OVER. The Jets went out this off-season with the sole mission to acquire depth for their offense. Last season saw them deal with bouts with inept offensive play and poor production due to the fact that their 1st team offense was being called on way too much to shoulder the burden of putting points on the board. Bringing in the likes of Derrick Mason, Plaxico Burres, Jeremy Kerley, and re-signing Santonio Holmes are all huge moves that automatically puts this receiving corps unit as one of the best in the league. The Jets also went out and acquired depth along the offensive line, another sore spot for gang green last season. The Texans possessed one of the more powerful of offenses last season and they did nothing note worthy to this unit over the off season. Matt Schaub and Andre Johnson may be the best pass and catch duo in the entire league and with Arian Foster entering his third year the sky is the limit for this Texans offense. Being the first game of the preseason, as it is, the starting offensive units will most likely only see two drives a piece, but I like the chances for points with those two drives. We will consider the OVER on the NFL seasons’ first Monday night affair and what a Monday night match up in store. Cheers!

NFL Preseason Picks: Bengals @ Lions 2011 NFL Preseason Odds, Free Picks, and Predictions

NFL Preseason Picks: Cincinnati Bengals @ Detroit Lions 2011 NFL Preseason Vegas Odds, Free Picks, and Expert Predictions: So the Andy Dalton era looks to take off tonight in the Motor City and the Bengals seem poised to stick to their guns and move on from Carson Palmer. Dalton has looked good in training camp, thus far, and is even drawing some comparisons to a Drew Brees type of pivot. Nonetheless, the rookie sensation out of TCU has his work cut out for him trying to lead an offense that lacks firepower and depth. Locking up running back Cedric Benson was a good call on the part of Cincinnati Bengals management, the wily veteran has resurrected his career in southern Ohio and has proven to be a consistent option. With “Drew Brees” under centre and Benson carrying the load behind, the Bengals are said to have “the next Randy Moss” wide right. The acquisition of A.J. Green in this years draft was a huge move that will help ease some of the burden on Dalton’s shoulders as Green is dynamic athlete that can get himself open on any play. The Georgia product was an ACC standout and his credentials are next to none, the Bengals will forgot about 85 sooner rather then later. As with any opening preseason game, the main objective will be to give their players some game time experience and build the camaraderie that any team leans on throughout the grueling weeks of an NFL schedule.

To say the Detroit Lions are a force in the making is putting it modestly lightly. The Honolulu blue and silver will look to finally “restore the roar’ in the Motor City this season and it all starts with a healthy Matthew Stafford. The 3rd year pivot has had his first two campaigns cut short due to shoulder injuries and he has yet to live up to the billing of the Lions franchise savior. But, all indications and reports are that Stafford has worked tremendously hard with his time off and has built up more strength and muscle mass in his upper body. When Stafford has been in the lineup the Lions have been relentless on opposing defenses and can stretch the field. Another Lion that will need to stay healthy in order for any postseason aspirations is sophomore running back Jahvid Best. Best was hindered for the majority of last season with a grueling turf toe ailment, but the initial games of the season without the injury sent shockwaves throughout the entire league. Best was explosive coming out of the backfield as a runner, and also as a receiver, and he was already garnering consideration as a runaway for the offensive rookie of the year. The defensive rookie of the year, Suh, will look to build upon a stellar rookie campaign and he will look to form a formidable force with rookie Nick Fairley out of Auburn. Fairley has been out of pads since last week when he underwent surgery on his foot, but he should be back in time for the opener. The Lions have a legitimate shot of being competitive right into December this year but it all starts with getting the prep work in during the preseason.

Tonight we will recommend a play on the Lions in their preseason opener with the Cincinnati Bengals. The Lions went out this off-season and addressed their need for depth and role players. Arguably, the Lions first three selections in this years draft were all drafted with depth in mind. Nick Fairley would give Suh or Corey Williams a breather, Mikel Leshoure would compliment Jahvid Best, and Titus Young would fill in for Derrick Williams or whoever the third receiver will be for the Lions this year. Unfortunately, Leshoure will be missed for the entire season with an ACL injury but the Lions have afforded their starters some much-needed breaks in games. It was evident in games last season that the starters were being relied on too much and they were tiring in key moments of games (see Jets game). The Bengals are rebuilding and it should be another tough season to endure for Marvin Lewis. Andy Dalton and A.J. Green will be the faces of the franchise for years to come but they will need to bide their time and have management surround them with the supporting cast. We will consider the Lions taking this one at home and giving their fans something to get excited about. Cheers!

Wednesday Night Free MLB Picks – Tigers @ Indians Odds, Lines, Picks and Predictions – MLB Betting 8-10-11

Free MLB Picks, Tips and Odds: Detroit Tigers @ Cleveland Indians Favorite, Moneyline, Total and Expert Predictions 8/10/11: With their loss to the Indians last night in fourteen innings the Detroit Tigers now lead the AL Central by a mere three games on this same Tribe club. It was David Pauley who was charged with the loss last night, actually at 1:52 this morning, when he graced the hand of Kosuke Fukodome with an errant ball with the bases loaded. Doug Fister was only able to work two innings in last nights loss as an hour long rain delay shelved his evening early. Fister, the pitcher brought over from the Mariners, coughed up two runs in the first and he has many Tigers fans questioning if he was the correct hurler to bring over. Aside from Pauley’s slip up in the bottom of the 14th, the Tigers bullpen actually preformed magnificently as they worked 11 scoreless innings. The Tigers bullpen has been an up and down roller coaster all year long but they are slowly coming around and the timing couldn’t be better. The Tigers have the offense to stay alive, the pitching to compete, but until their bullpen can consistently perform and get out of jams then the Tigers will continue to be a pretender.

The Cleveland Indians stand to only be 1 game back of the division leading Tigers by Thursday night and defensive performances as like last night will give them a really good chance. Starting pitcher Justin Masterson worked only two innings due to an hour-long rain delay last night, so it was the Indian’s bullpen that stepped up to the plate and delivered a valiant performance. The Tigers did get their hits however, but each time the Tribes defense would rob the Tigers out of scoring chances. With the Indians defensive performance over the past week they will not rush Grady Sizemore back from injury. Many thought that centre field would take a major hit with the absence of the all-star, but Ezequiel Carrera has stepped in quite admirably and has made the change seamless. The trait of most playoff clubs is excellent depth and the Indians have taken the better part of 6 years to build their depth and get to a position where they are not hurt when a player goes down.

Our complimentary selection tonight will be the Cleveland Indians who will be sending their big trade deadline acquisition in Ubaldo Jimenez to the mound tonight for his home debut. The ex-Rockie hurler has had a rather errant year to this point, but there are signs that point to him creeping closer and closer to the type of pitcher he was last season. The 2010 MLB season saw Jimenez burst onto the scene and he was the unquestioned ace of the Rockies pitching staff. Ubaldo can pitch with power, slow things down and locate, and he has excellent deception, the Indians are banking on this kid to find his all-star form before the stretch towards the playoffs. Jimenez does not have great stats against the Detroit Tigers lifetime, 3 career starts, but he should turn a good performance in as it is his home debut and he will want to bounce back from a poor Indians debut in Texas. The Tigers will send their young hurler in Ricky Porcello to the mound tonight in hopes that he can pick up his 12th win on the season. Detroit is 2-8 SU in its last 10 games when playing Cleveland and is 0-5 SU in its last 5 games when playing on the road against the Indians. The emotions will be high tonight and the fans should turn out as the Tribe will be playing with the chance to pull within two games of the AL Central lead. We will consider the Tribe leaning on the efforts of Ubaldo Jimenez tonight and mustering out another hard earned victory against their divisional nemesis in the Tigers. Cheers!

Tuesday Night Free MLB Picks – Athletics @ Blue Jays Odds, Lines, Picks and Predictions – MLB Betting 8-9-11

Free MLB Picks, Tips and Odds: Oakland Athletics @ Toronto Blue Jays Favorite, Moneyline, Total and Expert Predictions 8/9/11: What can be said about the Oakland Athletics effort as of late? The Athletics have used a string of solid series over the past four weeks to shake the criticism of being a old, lackluster ball club. Just recently, they have managed to win series against the Angels, Tigers, swept the Rays, Twins, and are coming off of a weekend series win over the Tampa Bay Rays again. There is no secret to the Athletics success as of late, they are playing hard and have diminished their mental lapses. With their young nucleus of players getting extremely viable time in the big leagues, when otherwise they wouldn’t, the head office for Oakland will need to surround this young talent with some proven leadership and charisma in the off-season. A couple sound and savvy veterans would complement this talented young line-up and quite possibly propel them into uncharted territory, territory the Athletics have not scene in awhile.

The call up of Brett Lawrie has proven to play dividends already and all indications are that he is the real deal. Lawrie batted .400 in his opening big league series against the Baltimore Orioles in which he was able to go yard for his first big league homer. The third basemen is scene as the future of the Blue Jays organization and many baseball insiders are calling the Canadian product the next big thing. The insertion of Lawrie to the lineup means the move of all-star Jose Bautista back to right field, a more comfortable spot for the home run champ. Bautista has better grasp of the fielding game and his long stride and arms makes him a viable perennial gold glover. Lawrie in the everyday lineup only makes Toronto a more lethal offensive unit and many would be pressed to find a weak bat across the 9 men unit. Alex Anthopolous will have his work cut out for him this offseason to build a quality pitching rotation that can give his team a chance to compete in the highly contested American League East division.

Tonight we will recommend a play on the Toronto Blue Jays to open up this three game set against the Oakland Athletics. Toronto flexed their offensive muscles with Brett Lawrie in the lineup this past weekend and they now posses an offense that bares and significant short coming from 1 to 9. Brett Cecil will take the mound for the home club in tonight’s affair as he will be looking to pick up this third straight victory. Since being recalled from AAA Las Vegas, Cecil has featured a new over the top pitching release that has garnered him with much more production and deception. Cecil has, for the majority of his career, performed well below his potential and he has yet to live up to his rookie billing as a solid starting pitcher. If the last three outings are any indication then Brett Cecil is finally maturing into the weapon he ought to be and teams are becoming weary of his new approach to hurling the ball. The Athletics are coming off a tremendous series against the Tampa Bay Rays in which hustle and effort were the main ingredients in their series win, but they may have compromised their effectiveness for their opening game against the Blue Jays. We will consider the Blue Jays leaning on the double Brett’s tonight on way to an impressive victory. Cheers!

Blue Jays @ Rays Odds, Lines, Free Picks and Predictions – Free MLB Picks 8-2-11

Free MLB Picks, Tips and Odds: Toronto Blue Jays @ Tampa Bay Rays Favorite, Moneyline, Total and Expert Predictions 8/2/11: As the season slate of games is starting to run thin the Toronto Blue Jays know that every game is a must win situation if they have any aspirations of October ball. While many would say this club has no chance of pulling things close the clubhouse of Toronto seems upbeat and ready for the haul towards the end of the season. General Manager Alex Anthopolous did his club a long time favor last week when he picked up the potential packed Colby Rasmus from the St. Louis Cardinals in a multi-player trade. Rasmus, who reportedly did not have a favorable relationship with Cardinals skipper Tony LaRussa, is a young player who has the potential to be a “5-tool” player. He has excellent technique and form when fielding, he can hit to all sides of the field, and he has speed to excel on the bags. Rasmus should blossom under new elements and a refreshing new start, his potential is sky high and he should be a fan favorite in the T Dot. The Blue Jays paid homage to their illustrious history when they hung the number 12 to the rafters of Rogers Centre in honor of Roberto Alomar. The Blue Jays organization has never, and most likely will never, have a second basemen like Alomar again. Roberto Alomar changed the way the second basemen position was ought to be played and he was the catalyst behind the Jays championships in 92’ and 93’.

The Rays are also in the same seat as the Blue Jays at this point in the season in that they are attempting to make up significant ground in hopes of being in the mix when the season ends in two months time. Tampa Bay is coming off of a series victory over the Seattle Mariners this past weekend as they took 2 of the 3 games and now trail the Red Sox by 10 games in the American League East. The Rays were one of the more quiet clubs at yesterdays non-waiver trading deadline and management seems quite content riding with their current line-up to the finish line. It will be imperative for the club to lock up Evan Longoria and David Price this off-season, they are the unquestioned leaders of the club and they still are on the up swing of their careers. The Rays, who were long time losers in the AL East ranks, are having an easier time now convincing top notch players to stick around because of their strong nucleus of young players and their commitment to win now.

Tonight we will recommend a play on the Toronto Blue Jays in the first game of this three game set in Florida. The Jays send their ace in Ricky Romero to the mound this evening, he will be looking to pick up his 9th win on the season. The Jays seem to be more upbeat and lively since their acquisition of centre fielder Colby Rasmus, the club has gone 3-1 since he has donned the black and blue. Jose Bautista will look to add on to this league lead in homers tonight, he has gone homerless in over a week now. As detailed in previous Jays previews, Toronto excels in the first game of series’ and always look to gain a leg up. I expect Toronto will come out swinging against a tough Rays hurler in David Price and look for them to be in the stealing mood as runs will be at a premium tonight. Toronto is 4-1 SU in its last 5 games and is 4-2 SU in its last 6 games on the road. Tropicana Field has long been a fortress for the Rays and a stumbling ground for most clubs but this year has proven the reverse, Tampa Bay is 2-4 SU in its last 6 games at home. We will consider the Blue Jays picking up a hard earned victory against one of the games best young hurlers tonight in what should be a spirited affair. Cheers!
