Middleweight Bout

Cung Le vs Patrick “The Predator” Cote

Former Strikeforce Middleweight Champ Cung Le (7-2) will be making his second appearance inside the UFC. His last trip earned him Fight on the Night honors in a loss to Wanderlei Silva. He looked fluid in the first but Silva caught him with a flurry of punches and knees in the second that stopped him at the 4:49 mark. Le brings a unique blend of striking to the cage utilizing unorthodox kicks to keep his opponents off balance and has won all 7 of his bouts by KO or TKO.

Patrick “The Predator” Cote (17-7) is riding a four fight win streak coming into this bout. Before that he hit a rough patch after losing to Anderson Silva in a middleweight championship bout. He dropped three in a row before moving on to lesser promotions to work his way back up. This will be his first fight back with the UFC since October of 2010. Cote is comfortable with staying on the outside landing punches and using the clinch against the cage when his opponents get to close.

On paper this looks like a stand up dream. Traditionally both these fighters like to stand and trade punches looking for the knockout. But with this being Cote’s (-230) first fight back after a long time away from the UFC look for him to be more conservative and not play Le’s game. Le (+180) has always been much more comfortable on the outside throwing wild kicks. Look for Cote to press Le up against the cage and turn this fight ugly landing tight punches and working for takedowns.

Prediction – Patrick “The Predator” Cote by way of unanimous decision

Light Heavyweight Bout

Forrest Griffin vs “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” Tito Ortiz

Forrest Griffin (18-7) has struggled with consistency as of late. After winning the light heavyweight belt he has since gone 2-3 and was knocked out in just 1:53 by Mauricio Rua in his most recent bout. Forrest is serviceable in every area of MMA but what makes him dangerous is he’s scrappy and he is always moving forward. At his peak when he won the belt he utilized a mix of punches, leg kicks and takedowns to the point where Quinton Jackson never got comfortable.

“The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” Tito Ortiz (16-10-1) was at one point in his career the most feared light heavyweight in the world. Now at the tail end of his career he has one win since 2006. Tito’s bread and butter has always been his wrestling but as the years have gone by he has lost that dominating part of his game. He showed he can still be dangerous in his fight with Ryan Bader finishing him by guillotine choke.

This will be the third time these fighters have faced off in the octagon. They have split wins and both have been by split decision. Ortiz (+240) will enter this fight with the added emotion that this will be the last time he fights having already announced he plans to retire after the bout. He has always fought emotional but he will have to keep it in check so he doesn’t gas out early. Look for Griffin (-320) to stay on the outside and let this fight wade into deep waters. He won’t be afraid to throw leg kicks as Tito’s aging wrestling won’t be enough to keep him on his back.

Prediction – Forrest Griffin by way of unanimous decision

Middleweight Championship Bout

Anderson “The Spider” Silva (Champion) vs Chael Sonnen (Challenger)

Anderson “The Spider” Silva (31-4) is one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in all of MMA. He has won 15 fights in a row with 10 of those fighting for or defending the middleweight title. He is the most accurate and dangerous fighter standing up being able to end a fight at any moment. Only two of his fights in the UFC have gone to decision finishing nine by knockout and two by submission.

Chael Sonnen (27-11-1) has been the only man to come close to ending Silva’s reign over the middleweight division. After controlling the first four rounds Silva was able to catch him in a triangle choke mid way through the fifth. Sonnen’s biggest asset is his wrestling as he is able to out muscle anyone at 185 pounds. To earn his rematch he defeated Michael Bisping in underwhelming fashion with a unanimous decision.

The only question anyone has ever had about Silva (-300) is his motivation. During some of his bouts he has looked bored and unwilling to take risks to finish the fight. Motivation will not be a problem in this fight. Sonnen (+220) has done everything he can to try to gain a psychological advantage over Silva. Anderson was taken by surprise the last time they met; he won’t make the same mistake twice. Expect Sonnen to eat his words as Silva comes out determined to knock him out.

Prediction – Anderson “The Spider” Silva by way of knock out

Heavyweight Bout

Roy “Big Country” Nelson vs. Dave Herman

Roy “Big Country” Nelson (16-7) is coming off of a Fight of the Night loss to Fabricio Werdum. After winning The Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights he has struggled with consistency losing three of his last four fights. Even with his struggles Nelson is an always dangerous fighter. On his feet he has a devastating over hand right and on the ground he can be suffocating.

This will be only the third fight inside the octagon for Dave Herman (21-3). His first two he split, winning by TKO and then getting TKOed by Stefan Struve. His greatest strength lies in his standup where he isn’t afraid to get creative with kicks and other techniques. While this puts him at risk of getting countered or taken down it can also put an opponent on their heels as they try to guess where strikes are coming from.

Lately Nelson (-225) has been facing some of the best heavyweights that the UFC has to offer. While no one who fights in the UFC is an easy win this will still feel like a substantial step down in competition for him. Herman (+175) has demonstrated that he can get up after being put on his back but he has never had a man with the size and control that Nelson has. Look for there to be a feeling out process on the feet and when Nelson gets tired of that he’ll shoot for takedowns where he’ll wear down and control Herman.

Prediction – Roy “Big Country” Nelson by way of TKO

Heavyweight Bout

Cain Velasquez vs. Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva

Cain Velasquez (9-1) suffered the first and only loss of his career in his last bout against Junior Dos Santos losing his heavyweight belt in just 64 seconds. The only thing that fight proved about Velasquez is that anyone can get caught in an MMA fight. He still has a skill set that puts him right at the top of the heap in the heavyweight division. He has excellent hands and can grind anyone down in the clinch or on the mat.

Jumping right into the fire in his UFC debut is Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva (16-3). He made his name over in Strikeforce going 3-2 with the biggest win of his career coming against Fedor Emelianenko. Silva’s greatest advantage in the cage is his sheer size standing 6’4” and usually weighing north of 280 pounds on fight night. He has serviceable standup but he does his best damage in top position raining down ground and pound.

The biggest challenge Silva (+310) will face in this bout is his lack of athleticism. He showed in his last fight he has problems with fighters who are quick on their feet with the ability to get into striking range before he can react. Worst of all for Silva is that Velasquez (-400) is all those things with the addition of a never ending gas tank. Coming off his first loss expect to see the best Velasquez yet as he out works and out paces Silva.

Prediction – Cain Velasquez by way of knockout

Heavyweight Championship Bout

Junior “Cigano” Dos Santos (Champion) vs. Frank Mir (Challenger)

A three time Knockout of the Night winner Junior “Cigano” Dos Santos (14-1) probably has the fastest hands in the heavyweight division. Of his fourteen victories eleven didn’t even make it out of the first round. Junior has a much underrated ground game that is only underrated because we never get to see it. He keeps fights standing by doing a lot of his work from the outside and having excellent takedown defense.

Frank Mir (16-5) keeps finding himself in opportunities to claim the heavyweight championship. He has gone 7-2 in his last nine fights with both losses coming in heavyweight title fights. He earned his way back to the top with a devastating submission victory over Antonio Nogueira and a little luck since Alistair Overeem failed a prefight drug test. Mir’s standup is ever improving but his real strength lies in his jiu-jitsu which is one of the best at heavyweight.

While Mir (+350) has excellent jiu-jitsu his weakness is getting the fight to the mat where he can use it. His three most recent submission victories came right after he got dropped or he dropped his opponent. So if he wants to get this fight down he is going to have to catch Junior (-550) on the chin. This will prove difficult as he will be content to stay on the outside, feed Mir an unhealthy dose of jabs and attack when he feels Mir is staggered. Mir has also shown he doesn’t have the greatest chin and Junior has made a career out of knocking people out.

Prediction – Junior “Cigano” Dos Santos by way of knockout

Bantamweight Bout

Miguel Angel Torres vs. Michael “Mayday” McDonald

The former WEC Bantamweight Champion Miguel Angel Torres (40-4) is looking to get back to the form that won him 37 out of 38 fights. A tall and lanky fighter for 135 pounds Torres will use that reach advantage to keep opponents at bay and secure submissions on the ground. Only going the distance 8 times and finishing 23 fights by submission he is the kind of fighter always looking to finish.

Michael “Mayday” McDonald (14-1) finished his first seven fights all within the first minute of the bout. At only 21 years old he has remained busy since turning pro in 2007. He is 3-0 in the UFC and his most recent win came in a 56 second knockout of Alex Soto. McDonald has a big right hand and excellent counter punching.

It’s hard to deny that McDonald (-110) has a very bright future ahead of him. He is young and always looking to finish his opponents. He will do great things in the UFC but this step up in competition will be a little too much for McDonald. Torres (-120) will use his reach to stay away from McDonald’s big right hand and use his jiu-jitsu if he has too. There’s no evidence that McDonald has the wrestling prowess to smother Torres like has happened in the past so expect this one to stay upright.

Prediction – Miguel Angel Torres by way of unanimous decision

Heavyweight Bout

Brendan “The Hybrid” Schaub vs. Ben Rothwell

After losing in The Ultimate Fighter finale Brendan “The Hybrid” Schaub (8-2) was looking like a top tier heavyweight until he ran into Antonio Nogueira. In his most recent bout he got brutally knocked out by the veteran Nogueira. While his chin was called into question his skills were not. He is a natural athlete with fast hands and knockout power.

Ben Rothwell (31-8) has recently struggled with consistency going 2-3 in his last five bouts. Another problem that plagues Rothwell is his cardio, gassing quickly in his last bout with Mark Hunt. When he is at his best is when he makes fights ugly grinding opponents against the cage and pulling them into brawls.

If Rothwell (+210) wants to win this fight he is going to have to test Schaub’s chin early. The longer this fight goes the longer Rothwell has to gas and for Schaub’s (-280) natural athleticism to take over. Expect Schaub to use his quickness to stay out of range while peppering shots until he finds a hole to exploit.

Prediction – Brendan “The Hybrid” Schaub by way of TKO

UFC 145 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

Welterweight Bout

Rory MacDonald vs. “Beautiful” Che Mills

Rory MacDonald (12-1) is one of the many young prospects in the welterweight division. The only loss of his career came against now interim champ Carlos Condit. He has shown he is dangerous where ever the fight is taking place finishing five fights by knockout and six by submission. While one win against a big name could propel him to contention the UFC is satisfied with him staying with the middle of the pack for now.

“Beautiful” Che Mills (14-4, 1 NC) made his UFC debut in his most recent bout knocking out Chris Cope in just 40 seconds. Primarily known as a striker he has shown good timing in his standup evident by his knees and punches that put down Cope. Mills has shown he is vulnerable to jiu-jitsu having three of his four losses coming from submissions.

The UFC is hoping this is going to be a holdover fight. With the 170 pound division stacked with contenders they aren’t ready to throw MacDonald (-600) into that category yet so instead they throw him an opponent new to the UFC coming off a big victory. Unless Mills (+400) can catch MacDonald sleeping and land a big punch expect this fight to be academic.

Prediction – Rory MacDonald by way of TKO

UFC 145 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

Light Heavyweight Title Bout

Jon “Bones” Jones (Champion) vs. “Suga” Rashad Evans (Challenger)

Dana White and the UFC are desperately trying to make Jon “Bones” Jones (15-1) the new face of the organization. We have still yet to see this kid truly tested in the octagon and he only seems to get better with every fight. His only loss came from a DQ in a bout he was utterly dominating. Jones will have a significant reach advantage against anyone at 205 which gives him an advantage on the feet and with his jiu-jitsu.

“Suga” Rashad Evans (17-1-1) is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Phil Davis that left a lot of fans grumbling. Even though Evans wasn’t able to finish the fight he still completely dominated every round rendering Davis pretty much useless. He is one of the fastest fighters at light heavyweight and has an explosive and well timed takedown.

With these two being former teammates and friends it has added fuel to the drama leading up to the fight. While they have been talking back and forth they are both professionals so don’t expect the antics outside the cage to influence what will happen when the bell finally rings. What will happen is that Evans (+300) is going to have a lot of problems getting into range where he will be able to do damage. The long reach of Jones (-500) will keep him on the outside where he can pick him apart with his unorthodox striking. Evans best hope at scoring will be his takedowns but don’t expect Jones to go down easily who also has an excellent wrestling base. Jones controls the location and tempo of this fight until he decides to attack and finish.

Prediction – Jon “Bones” Jones by way of submission

Welterweight Bout

Paul “Semtex” Daley vs. Kazuo Misaki

Paul “Semtex” Daley (29-11-2) has been bouncing around many organizations since his firing from the UFC in May of 2010. Since then he has gone 6-2 but a far less impressive 1-2 within Strikeforce. Daley has been working hard on his takedown defense but he is still more or less a one trick pony. He likes to stand and bang hoping he can connect with his monster left hand. He is still always dangerous and exciting because he can end anyone’s night with one clean shot.

Kazuo Misaki (24-11-2, 1NC) was the 2006 Pride Welterweight Grand Prix Champion defeating Dan Henderson on his way to the finals. This will be his second appearance in Strikeforce with his first being a TKO victory over Joe Riggs. Misaki has shown well rounded skills in his career winning nine times by submission and six by (T)KO. This will be the first time that he has fought at 170 pounds so he may be affected by the weight cut.

Misaki (+250) will need to stay light and cut angles on the feet if he wants to survive. He has shown he has good standup but he needs to avoid getting to comfortable on the feet. It only takes one from Daley to put an opponent to sleep. Look for Daley to come out headhunting eager to get an exciting finish after going the distance in his last two bouts.

Prediction – Paul “Semtex” Daley by way of knockout

Strikeforce Free Picks, Odds and Predictions

Lightweight Bout

Josh “The Punk” Thompson vs. “King” K.J. Noons

Josh “The Punk” Thompson (18-4, 1NC) is 2-2 in his last four bouts as he is trying to return to his form where he won eight in a row before it got snapped by Gilbert Melendez. He has been on the shelf due to injury since December of 2010 so ring rust will be a real threat. Before his long layoff he was a quick, powerful striker that likes to mix it up in the standup.

“King” K.J. Noons (11-4) had won six fights in a row before he ran into Nick Diaz. Noons is a handful for anyone on the feet using level changes and top shelf boxing to beat up his opponents. While he has some of the best boxing in the sport he is coming off a very lackluster win over Billy Evangelista. He did just enough to take home the win but never looked dominant in the process.

The biggest question in this fight will be what kind of condition Thompson (-170) is in. A year away from the cage is a very long time and some fighters have trouble transitioning back in. Thompson may be in luck though as Noons (+140) has shown he is prone to gassing. Look for Thompson to come back hungry and outwork Noons in early rounds to wear him down.

Prediction – Josh “The Punk” Thompson by way of unanimous decision

Woman’s Bantamweight Championship Bout

Miesha “Takedown” Tate (Champion) vs. Ronda “Rowdy” Rousey (Challenger)

The Woman’s Bantamweight Champion Miesha “Takedown” Tate (12-2) is on a six fight win streak coming into the first defense of her title. She uses her striking not to inflict massive amounts of damage but to open up opportunities for takedowns. That is where she gets her best work in utilizing ground and pound and keeping excellent control of her opponent. She is able to open up with her ground work due to the fact that she has solid submission defense.

An Olympic caliber judo practitioner Ronda “Rowdy” Rousey (4-0) longest MMA bout has gone 57 seconds. What’s even more impressive is that she finished all four of her professional fights and three amateur bouts with armbars. With that little cage time it’s hard to gauge exactly what her weaknesses are. One thing is for sure; if you’re fighting her protect your arms.

Rousey (-300) won’t be able to finish this fight inside a minute like she has against everyone else. Tate (+220) will bring enough skills to the table to drag this fight into deeper waters. The biggest question will be how Rousey reacts. If she gets frustrated and goes for broke to early she may get caught in the excellent ground and pound of Tate. More likely is that she will keep her cool and eventually her judo will
prevail.

Prediction – Ronda “Rowdy” Rousey by way of submissionRous

Heavyweight Bout

Mark “Super Samoan” Hunt vs. Cheick Kongo

Mark “Super Samoan” Hunt (7-7) hit a rough patch after starting 5-1. He went on to lose his next six bouts getting finished by submissions five times and knocked out once. Hunt is best known for his go for broke standup brawling style and almost always takes a tremendous amount of punishment in his fights. It’s his iron chin and always exciting fights that got him to the UFC where he has gone 2-1, winner of his last two.

Consistency has been an issue for Cheick Kongo (17-6-2) never having won more than four fights in a row. Since getting choked out by Frank Mir he has gone 3-0-1 with the draw coming against Travis Browne, Kongo had a point deducted for grabbing his shorts. In his fight with Pat Barry he showed composer and the ability to come back from bad spots. Kongo was badly hurt but was able to keep it together just long enough to land a huge punch that knocked Barry out cold.

While neither of these fighters are top tier heavyweights this fight is going to be lights out. Both of them will be head hunting from the start and it’s only a matter of time before someone connects. Hunt (NA) will do what he always does; wade through punches to get in tight enough to land his own. The difference maker in this bout is Kongo’s (NA) wrestling. While he’ll be content to stand and trade early look for him to eventually take the fight to the mat where Hunt is weakest. When it goes down Kongo will unleash vicious ground and pound.

Prediction – Cheick Kongo by way of TKO

UFC 144 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

Light Heavyweight Bout

Quinton “Rampage” Jackson vs. Ryan “Darth” Bader

Quinton “Rampage” Jackson (32-9) hasn’t been coming off a worse loss since “Shogun” Rua blitzed him at the Pride 2005 Grand Prix. The current 205 pound king Jon Jones picked him apart for the better part of four rounds before securing a rear naked choke to end the fight. Even though he was unable to hang with the champ he is still a threat in the 205 pound division. Rampage has knockout power in both hands and is a handful to take down even for the best wrestlers.

Ryan “Darth” Bader (13-2) shocked the world in the wrong way when he got choked out by Tito Ortiz in July of last year. He started out 12-0 getting handed his first loss against now champ Jon Jones. Bader was able to rebound after the Tito loss knocking out Jason Brilz in just 1:17. Bader was on the fast track to a title shot before getting derailed and that’s exactly where he is working to get to again.

Both these fighters have similar styles; they like to turn fights into boxing matches but have the ability to wrestle if they need to. Bader (+190) is more likely to use his wrestling offensively so expect a few shots from him. Taking down Jackson (-240) will prove difficult because they are so evenly matched strength wise. Jackson will keep this fight standing and eventually land a punch that hobbles Bader that will give him the opening he needs.

Prediction – Quinton “Rampage” Jackson by way of TKO

UFC 144 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

Lightweight Championship Bout

Frankie “The Answer” Edgar (Champion) vs. Benson “Smooth” Henderson (Challenger)

Frankie “The Answer” Edgar’s (14-1-1) only loss came back in 2008 to Gray Maynard, a loss he avenged by knocking him out in their last matchup in October. He is a fighter that loves to use angles and quick hands to do damage before his opponent has time to counter. He is also excellent in sprawls where he will take advantage of small opening to better his position. With crisp boxing and an endless gas tank he pushes his opponents to their breaking points and capitalizes when they are tired.

Benson “Smooth” Henderson (15-2) has come back strong after taking a loss in his last WEC appearance. He has won all three of his fights under the UFC banner and has knocked off two number one contenders to get his shot at the belt. Most impressive was his destruction of Jim Miler. Miller was on a seven fight win streak and was widely considered the number one contender before getting smashed by Henderson. He is well versed in striking and grappling and is nearly impossible to submit.

This looks to be a war fought at a relentless pace. Edgar (-130) is always in peak physical condition come fight night and always looks to wear opponents down with his stamina. He is going to need to use all that speed and conditioning to get past Henderson (EV). Henderson uses all facets of MMA to beat down and frustrate his opponents. On top of that he has one of the most dangerous guillotines in the sport that he can slap on in an instant. This will be a back and forth war but when it’s all over the lightweight belt will have a new owner.

Prediction – Benson “Smooth” Henderson by way of unanimous decision

Middleweight Bout

Ed “Short Fuse” Herman vs. Clifford Starks

After being on the shelf for over two years due to a knee injury Ed “Short Fuse” Herman (19-7) made an impressive 2011 return with two first round finishes. His first fight back he won in just 48 seconds in a TKO victory over Tim Credeur. Herman has decent standup but is most comfortable on the ground using strikes and threatening submissions.

Still new to MMA Clifford Starks (8-0) made his UFC debut in October of 2011 with a unanimous decision victory over Dustin Jacoby. He is a former Arizona State NCAA Division I wrestling team and uses that background heavily in the cage. Before his UFC debut he primarily fought in Rage in the Cage finishing four of his five fights.

Even though he was out for such a long period of time Herman (-300) made a statement in 2011 that he shouldn’t be forgotten. He is crafty on the ground and has a knack for finishing his opponents. Starks (+220) will also be facing a man that has far more cage experience then he does. Bettors can look for Herman to close the distance quickly, do work in the clinch and ultimately take the fight to the ground where he can lock in a submission.

Prediction – Ed “Short Fuse” Herman by way of submission

UFC 143 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

Bantamweight Bout

Renan “Barao” Pegado vs. Scott “Young Guns” Jorgensen

With his only loss coming in his MMA debut Renan “Barao” Pegado (27-1, 1NC) has fought 28 straight times without being handed a loss. What makes Barao so special is his varied attack and the ability to finish fights where ever they take place winning thirteen by submissions and six by (T)KO. His most recent bout was a rear-naked choke victory inside of the first round against Brad Pickett.

Scott “Young Guns” Jorgensen (13-4) biggest enemy has been consistency never having strung together more than five victories. He has bounced back after losing a five round battle with current bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz by winning his next two. His greatest asset is his wrestling that he uses to control position and beat up on his opponents.

Speaking in terms of ways to win a fight Barao (-240) has a huge advantage. He is far more dynamic on the feet and has a slick jiu-jitsu game. The advantage that Jorgensen (+190) will possess is raw power. He has one punch knockout power and strong enough wrestling to bully his opponents. Even though Jorgensen has the advantage in power Barao is going to be too explosive and varied in his attack to do much with it. Barao continues his rise up the bantamweight ladder bringing him even closer to a shot at Dominick Cruz.

Prediction – Renan “Barao” Pegado by way of TKO

Welterweight Bout

Josh “Kos” Koscheck vs. Mike Pierce

An alumnus of the first season of The Ultimate Fighter Josh “Kos” Koscheck (16-5) has spent almost his entire career under the UFC banner. He came back in dramatic fashion after he got steam rolled by Georges St-Pierre to knockout Matt Hughes with one second remaining in the first round. When he first entered MMA Koscheck was a one trick pony with his wrestling. Since then he has evolved his standup and now possess one punch knockout power.

Mike Pierce (13-4) is 4-1 in his last five bouts and has never been finished in his MMA career. Pierce does his best damage within the clinch using dirty boxing and elbows. He has shown he is susceptible to top tier wrestlers dropping fights to Jon Fitch and Johny Hendricks. He’ll need to clean up his takedown defense because it’s guaranteed Koscheck will eventually want to take this fight to the mat.

Koscheck (-240) wants to keep the momentum rolling of his big victory over Matt Hughes. With the future of GSP uncertain this may be the best opportunity for him to work his way back up the ladder and possibly to UFC gold. Make no mistake though, Pierce is a tough and scrappy fighter that will give his opponents fits if you let him hang around. Koscheck comes out aggressive with a good game plan and takes another step towards a title shot.

Prediction – Josh Koscheck by way of unanimous decision

Heavyweight Bout

Roy “Big Country” Nelson vs. Fabricio “Vai Cavalo” Werdum

Roy “Big Country” Nelson (16-6) ended his two fight skid with a knockout of Mirko Cro Cop back in October. Nelson is a heavyweight that could most likely make 205 without too much trouble because he carries most of his weight in his midsection versus muscle mass. He has shown one punch knockout power with his right hand and has a very strong wrestling game with an ability to hold positions.

Fabricio “Vai Cavalo” Werdum (14-5-1) is the man that ended Fedor Emelianenko’s 28-fight unbeaten streak. With that being the high point of his career he followed it up with an uninspired, lackluster unanimous decision loss to Alistair Overeem. While he showed improved standup against Overeem he had no answer of how to get the fight to the ground where he is most dangerous. Of his fourteen wins eight have come by way of submission.

Even though Nelson (+115) has excellent wrestling he is going to want to keep this fight standing. Instead of using his wrestling to get the fight down he’ll use it defend the takedown and do damage inside the clinch. Werdum (-145) needs to avoid the big right hand and frustrate Big Country in standup exchanges. As Nelson tires look for him to take advantage and get the fight to the ground where he will attempt multiple submissions.

Prediction – Fabricio “Vai Cavalo” Werdum by way of submission

Interim Welterweight Championship Bout

Nick Diaz vs “Natural Born Killer” Carlos Condit

Former Strikeforce Welterweight Champion Nick Diaz (26-7, 1NC) will now have the opportunity to add the UFC strap to his resume. Currently riding an eleven fight win streak Diaz has one of the most unique styles in MMA. Punches in bunches doesn’t even begin to describe the volume of strikes he throws. Only throwing punches at around 50% allows him to keep up his relentless pace mixing in body shots with blows to the head. He is just as dangerous on the mat being a black belt in jiu-jitsu under Cesar Gracie and has finished eight fights by submission.

“Natural Born Killer” Carlos Condit (27-5) held the WEC welterweight title for over a year before making the transition to the UFC. His first appearance in the octagon was his only loss in his last 13 fights. In this case the nickname truly does reflect the fighter with Condit going the distance only once in his 27 wins. Of the 26 that he finished he’s split right down the middle with 13 (T)KO and 13 submissions. His last three fights have earned him two Knockouts of The Night and the other a Fight of the Night. To say Condit is aggressive and explosive is a monumental understatement.

This bout has the potential to be Fight of the Year. Both these fighters don’t know the meaning of back down or ‘let’s tie up on the cage and take a quick breather’. This fight will be fought at a brutal pace from the first bell until someone is unconscious or tapping. Both of them are ridiculously well rounded and not afraid to eat a punch to land their own. The problem Condit (+160) will present for Diaz is that he is a better version of everyone he has recently faced. He won’t fade like Penn and has a bigger bag of tricks than Daley. Even with all that Diaz (-200) will still be too much. The sheer number of strikes he lands and his uncanny ability to frustrate his opponents will eventually chip away at Condit. Diaz’s iron chin will make sure he makes it into the deeper rounds where he will use his jiu-jitsu to become the interim champ.

Prediction – Nick Diaz by way of submission

Middleweight Bout

Damian Maia vs. Chris “The All-American” Weidman

Starting his career 11-0 Damian Maia (15-3) is one of the best submission artists at 185. He has finished eight fights via tap out and has earned submission of the night four times. As of late he has lost that killer instinct with his last six fights all going to decision and going 4-3 in his last seven trips inside the octagon.

Chris “The All-American” Weidman (7-0) is a perfect 3-0 in his appearances in the octagon finishing his most recent opponent by d’arce choke. His fighting background is wrestling where he was a two time Division I All-American. While he has shown marked improvement in his standup he is most comfortable grappling and getting his opponents to the ground.

When two fighters with high level ground games meet in the cage it’s usually who can win the battle on the feet that takes the bout. Maia (+120) has shown improved standup but that isn’t saying much since it has looked very bad in the past. He has shown higher levels of aggression on the feet but he still has a long way to go with his technique. What Weidman (-150) has going for him is he is still relatively new to the sport and gets better every time he steps into the cage. Expect to see the best Weidman yet as he beats Maia to the punch and is able to control his jiu-jitsu with his position control.

Prediction – Chris “The All-American” Weidman by way of unanimous decision

Middleweight Bout

Chael Sonnen vs. Michael “The Count” Bisping

Chael Sonnen (26-11-1) spent over a year away from the UFC before his return in October of 2011. In his return fight be submitted Brian Stann by arm triangle choke in the second round. Sonnen may be the best wrestler at 185 with an uncanny ability to control his opponents on the ground while keeping busy enough to keep the fight there.

Michael “The Count” Bisping (22-3) has only been stopped once in his career getting viciously knocked out by Dan Henderson. He likes to use a stick and move strategy. He uses his hand speed to pepper in a few shots and slip out of the pocket before his opponent has an opportunity to land. He has also shown good wrestling as he is usually able to get fighters to the mat and land ground and pound.

Bisping’s (+360) success in this fight will be determined by whether or not he can stay on his feet. Even though he has serviceable wrestling he has never faced anyone on the level of Sonnen (-450). Cardio wont’ be a problem for Bisping as he always comes into fights with excellent conditioning. The problem he will face is Sonnen’s constant pressure and relentless pursuit of takedowns. Sonnen is notoriously weak against submissions but Bisping hasn’t shown aptitude towards the sub never having pulled one off in the UFC. Once Sonnen scores a takedown expect to see the fight stay there while he rains down punches and elbows.

Prediction – Chael Sonnen by way of TKO

Light Heavyweight Bout

“Suga” Rashad Evans vs. Phil “Mr. Wonderful” Davis

“Suga” Rashad Evans (21-1-1) was the season 2 The Ultimate Fighter winner at heavyweight and is a former UFC Light Heavyweight champion. Evans uses his speed as his greatest ally moving in and out and exploding into takedowns. He earned the opportunity to fight for the title again after beating Quinton Jackson in May of 2010 but was sidelined due to an untimely injury. After a year layoff he made an impressive return with a second round TKO victory over Tito Ortiz.

UFC Betting

Phil “Mr. Wonderful” Davis (9-0) made his MMA debut in 2008 and after only four victories made his way into the UFC. He has shot up the UFC light heavyweight ladder with victories over Brian Stann and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. While he has serviceable standup he more uses it to close the distance and work his clinch game. When he does get the fight to the ground he’s not content to just keep it there and will work to improve position and finish the fight.

Both of these fighters have an excellent base in wrestling even though Evans (-165) has always been a relatively small light heavyweight. They are going to have problems taking each other down so whoever can take control of the standup will be able to control the fight. While Davis (+135) has shown good standup he lacks the speed and one punch knockout power of Evans. Evans will control the pace of the fight and score takedowns late when he has worn down Davis.

Prediction – “Suga” Rashad Evans by way of unanimous decision

UFC 142 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

Lightweight Bout

Edson “Junior” Barboza vs. Terry Etim

Edison “Junior” Barboza (9-0) will be putting his perfect record on the line when he steps into the cage. He finished his first seven fights winning six by (T)KO and one by submission with only two of those fights exiting the first round. His last two bouts with Ross Pearson and Anthony Njokuani earned the Brazilian Fight of the Night honors.

After being shelved for 18 months due to an injury Terry Etim (15-3) made an impressive return to the octagon with a 17 second submission win over Edward Faaloloto. Since his arrival to the UFC in 2007 he has gone 6-3 and won Submission of the Night honors four times. Before entering the UFC he was a perfect 9-0 finishing every one of his opponents, eight by submission and one by knockout.

This is a fight between two young, well-rounded up and comers in the UFC. While Barboza (-270) has been a beast in most of his fights it was evident by his last two that if his timing and rhythm get thrown off he can have problems. It is Etim’s (+210) job to keep him off schedule and avoid the big power of Barboza. On top of that Etim’s best chance at winning this fight is closing the distance to clinch up and get this bout to the mat where he can use his top shelf jiu-jitsu. That will be dangerous because he’ll have to wade through Barboza’s wheelhouse to get there. This bout stays on the feet where Barboza beats him up and looks to finish when the opportunity presents itself.

Prediction – Edson “Junior” Barboza by way of TKO

Welterweight Bout

Erick Silva vs. Carlo “Neo” Prater

This will be the second time Erick Silva (13-1, 1NC) will step into the octagon with his first being a knockout victory in just 40 seconds against Luis Ramos. He has shown well rounded skills outside the UFC winning seven fights by submission and three by (T)KO. Silva is also the inaugural Jungle Fight Welterweight Champion winning it in October of 2010.

A veteran of 40 MMA fights Carlo “Neo” Prater (29-10-1) will be making his UFC debut. Prater is currently riding a four fight win streak where he finished all four by way of submission. His obvious strength is the ground game finishing 16 fights by submission.

The greatest threat that Silva (-485) will face is if this fight hits the mat. If he is able to keep the fight standing Prater (+395) will have a hard time weathering the superior standup of Silva. Prater will make it a tough, competitive fight but in the end Silva’s striking and reach advantage will be too much to overcome.

Prediction – Erick Silva by way of unanimous decision

UFC 142 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

Rousimar “Toquinho” Palhares vs. Mike “The Master of Disaster” Massenzio

Rousimar “Toquinho” Palhares (13-3) is as much known for his devastating heel hooks as he is for his unusual behavior inside the cage. In his fight with Nate Marquardt he turned to the referee to complain about greasing and got TKOed for his trouble. In his most recent battle against Dan Miller he had him badly hurt on the ground and decided to celebrate before the ref stopped the fight. He went on to win a unanimous decision but made the bout much harder on himself.

Recently Mike “The Master of Disaster” Massenzio (13-5) has had problems with consistency dropping four of his last seven. His problems have mainly come inside the UFC going 2-3 having been finished twice. Massenzio comes from a strong wrestling background which he supports with solid jiu-jitsu.

If Massenzio (+375) wants to win this fight he is going to have to drag Palhares into deep waters. Palhares (-475) has shown before that in later rounds he begins to fade. This means Massenzio is going to have to weather an early onslaught and still have enough left to finish the fight late. But the more likely scenario is that Palhares comes out fast and finishes fast.

Prediction – Rousimar “Toquinho” Palhares by way of TKO

UFC 142 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

Middleweight Bout

“The Phenom” Vitor Belfort vs. Anthony “Rumble” Johnson

“The Phenom” Vitor Belfort (20-9) has been a staple of MMA since 1996. He is the former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion and also held that belt in Affliction before it dissolved. Since his drop to middleweight he has gone 4-1 with his only loss coming to the current 185 pound champ Anderson Silva. He is known for the blistering speed he has in his hands which also come equipped with one punch knockout power.

Anthony “Rumble” Johnson (10-3) is coming off a first round Knockout of the Night performance against Charlie Brenneman. This will be his debut at middleweight, a much better fit for his frame then welterweight. While he likes to stand and trade his true strength is in his wrestling coupled with the ability to control position.

This fight will be decided by who can keep the fight where they are most comfortable. Even though Johnson (EV) will have the reach advantage he’s going to be in danger whenever the fight is on its feet. What he should do is bully Belfort (-130) against the cage and use clinch work to wear him down and score takedowns where he can. It will be Belfort job to blitz in with strikes and get out of arms reach before Johnson can grab a hold of him. With the extra 15 pounds Johnson will be the strongest he’s ever been inside the cage.

Prediction – Anthony “Rumble” Johnson by way of unanimous decision

UFC 142 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

Featherweight Championship Bout

Jose “Junior” Aldo (Champion) vs. Chad “Money” Mendes (Challenger)

Riding a thirteen fight win streak champion Jose “Junior” Aldo (20-1) has shown time and again why he deserves to be mentioned with the very best pound for pound fighters in the world. He was the last WEC featherweight champion and is the first in the UFC. Aldo uses precise striking with a mix of wild techniques that keep his opponents off balance it terms of timing.

Chad “Money” Mendes (12-0) boasts a perfect record in MMA and has won his last four bouts by way of unanimous decision. While he has shown improved standup his modus operandi is still to use strikes to set up takedowns. In his previous bouts his opponents have had a hard time keeping the fight standing because of Mendes’ superior wrestling.

This fight is going to remind people why Aldo is so highly ranked among all the fighters in the world. Everyone got spoiled by his WEC domination so two unanimous decision victories in a row looks rather lackluster. Aldo (-240) is going to impose his will on the feet and defend the takedowns of Mendes. If Urijah Faber wasn’t able to get Aldo to the mat then Mendes (+190) is going to have troubles. Even if the fight goes to the ground Aldo has the jiu-jitsu skills to neutralize Mendes. Bettors can be confident that Aldo is ready to defend the takedowns and assert himself with striking.

Prediction – Jose “Junior” Aldo by way of TKO

Welterweight Bout

Tarec “Sponge” Saffiedine vs. Tyler “The Evolution” Stinson

Tarec “Sponge” Saffiedine (11-3) is coming off the biggest win of his career, a dismantling of Scott Smith. In that fight he showed diversity in his striking and his ability to stay on the outside. He is an impressive 3-1 inside of Strikeforce with his only loss coming to Tyron Woodley. In that bout Woodley was able to pull Saffiedine into fighting his game with grappling and clinch work.

Tyler “The Evolution” Stinson (21-7) was impressive in his Strikeforce debut knocking out Eduardo Pamplona in just fifteen seconds. He started by fighting regionally in Oklahoma and in just his third fight won the Masters of the Cage middleweight Championship. He is making a big step up in competition in his second Strikeforce appearance.

If Stinson (NA) wants to have success in this fight he’ll need to find it on the ground. Saffiedine (NA) is too well rounded and diversified on the outside. Saffiedine will keep this fight standing and pick apart Stinson with a mix of hands and feet on his way to victory.

Prediction – Tarec “Sponge” Saffiedine by way of unanimous decision

Strikeforce Free Picks, Odds and Predictions

Welterweight Bout

Tyron “T-Wood” Woodley vs. Jordan “Young Gun” Mein

Tyron “T-Wood” Woodley (9-0) has yet to be defeated and has fought within Strikeforce seven times. Of those four he finished three by submission and one via knockout. He possesses good standup but his real strength comes from his wrestling. He’s the type of fighter that likes to wear his opponents down with clinch work and grappling.

At 22 years old it’s hard to believe Jordan “Young Gun” Mein (23-7) is already a 30 fight vet. In his 23 wins Mein has shown well rounded skills finishing 13 fights via (T)KO and 7 by submission. His last bout was his Strikeforce debut where he finished Evangelista Santos in the third via TKO. He is riding a six fight win streak in large part because of his technical striking.

The key to this fight is whether or not Mein (NA) can keep his distance and land strikes from the outside. From a distance he will have the advantage but if he lets Woodley (NA) get in tight he’ll be in for a long night. Look for Woodley to use his athleticism to work his way to the inside, bully him up against the cage and grind out an ugly win.

Prediction – Tyron “T-Wood” Woodley by way of unanimous decision

Light Heavyweight Bout

“King Mo” Mo Lawal vs. Lorenz “The Monsoon” Larkin

A former light heavyweight champion in Strikeforce “King Mo” Mo Lawal (8-1) is also a three-time U.S. Senior National Wrestling Champion. He has fought four times under the Strikeforce banner earning a record of 3-1. Lawal mixes heavy hands with a top shelf wrestling game to dominate position and stifle his opponents striking.

Lorenz “The Monsoon” Larkin (12-0) has impressively strung together twelve straight wins with three of them coming with Strikeforce. In his twelve fight career he has demonstrated heavy hands ending eight fights by (T)KO. He has also shown that he can win fights even outside of his comfort zone. Nick Rossborough was able to muscle him up against the cage and make it a match of who could control position. Larkin won the bout via unanimous decision.

Bottom line of this fight is that Larkin (NA) has never faced a wrestler like Lawal. It won’t be enough for Larkin to get backed up against that cage and grapple because if he does he’s going to get taken down. Lawal (NA) will stand and trade for as long as he feels comfortable. When he feels he is losing or getting hit too much look for him to take the fight to the mat and control position.

Prediction – “King Mo” Mo Lawal by way of unanimous decision

Strikeforce Free Picks, Odds and Predictions

Middleweight Bout

“Ruthless” Robbie Lawler vs. Adlan “Borz” Amagov

“Ruthless” Robbie Lawler (18-8, 1NC) has had problems stringing together wins as of late losing four of his last six. Lawler is a brawler preferring to stand and trade in wild exchanges. He’s the type of fighter that has one punch knockout power in both hands and will wade through punches to get into range.

Adlan “Borz” Amagov (9-1-1) hasn’t lost a fight since his debut in MMA. In his nine wins he’s only gone the distance three times and finished the other six by (T)KO. This will be his third appearance in Strikeforce having a split decision victory over Ronald Stallings and a knockout win over Anthony Smith.

Lawler’s (NA) recent troubles have come against opponents that could control him in grappling and the ground game. In last two bouts he hasn’t been able to showcase his punching power due to this. He’s not going to have the problem with Amagov (NA) who will most likely be happy to stand and bang. If Amagov wants this strategy to work he needs to stay on the outside to avoid the power punching of Lawler. But as the time ticks by it just adds to the odds of Lawler landing a big shot.

Prediction – “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler by way of TKO

Strikeforce Free Picks, Odds and Predictions

Middleweight Championship Bout

Luke Rockhold (Champion) vs. “The Dean of Mean” Keith Jardine

The first time Luke Rockhold (8-1) ever fought past the first round was his five round unanimous decision victory to take the middleweight title away from Ronaldo Souza. In his other seven wins he has finished with submissions six times and one TKO. Rockhold is currently 7-0 with Strikeforce and is set to make his first title defense.

A vet of the UFC “The Dean of Mean” Keith Jardine (17-9-2) is dropping down from his usual 205 for this fight. His fall from the UFC wasn’t graceful having lost four in a row before he was cut. Since his exit he has gone 2-1-1 and somehow got a title shot in a weight class he’s never fought in. Even though he’s had a tough few years his awkward style of standup can still present problems.

One big factor in this fight is how Jardine’s (NA) body will take to the weight cut. He has always fought at heavyweight and light heavyweight and now he’s asking his body to be at peak physical conditioning at 185. What we do know is Rockhold (NA) can take a punch and he proved he can excel when taken into deep waters. When Jardine begins to feel the standup getting away from him he will look to take this fight to the ground which is dangerous against such a crisp jiu-jitsu practitioner. Rockhold will test Jardine’s chin and end the vet’s night in disappointment.

Prediction – Luke Rockhold by way of TKO

Lightweight Bout

KJ Noons vs. Billy Evangelista

KJ Noons (10-4) has only fight twice since October of 2010 and has lost both by unanimous decisions. Noons is a very high level boxer that utilizes odd angles and feints as well as anyone in MMA. He holds the distinction of being the last person to hand Nick Diaz a loss way back in 2007. He ran into problems against his last opponent Jorge Masvidal due to his varied attacks and ability to get Noons to the ground.

Starting off his career 9-0 Billy Evangelista (11-1, 1NC) first true loss came in his most recent bout with Jorge Masvidal. He does possess power in his hands ending eight fights by (T)KO. While he has looked solid in his last two bouts winning by unanimous decision he has also shown holes in his standup.

This bout is all about where it takes place. Noons (-240) will have a clear advantage in the standup with his slick in and out striking but he’ll have to keep it there. He has shown that he’s not very comfortable fighting off his back. Evangelista (+190) will have to land leg kicks early to slow the movements of Noons and then work takedowns if he wants to stay in this fight. In the end Noons is to fast and precise and finishes before the final bell.

Prediction – KJ Noons by way of TKO

Light Heavyweight Bout

Gegard Mousasi vs. Ovince St. Preux

Gegard Mousasi (31-3-2) is making his first return to Strikeforce since fighting to a draw with Keith Jardine. Mousasi is somewhat of a mystery showing flashes of greatness and then comes back and only earns a draw against a washed up Keith Jardine. When he’s on his game he has some of the most devastating kickboxing in MMA.

Taking a huge step up in competition in this fight is Ovince St. Preux (11-4). He has fought in Strikeforce five times and is a perfect 5-0. A former linebacker at the University of Tennessee St. Preux uses his superior athletic talent to blast through his opponents. While he still needs to improve at all levels in MMA this makes up for a lot of his shortcomings.

Mousasi (-300) has shown in previous fights that he can be beaten by wrestlers. Often times it has almost looked to easy to get him to the ground. This needs to be the backbone of St. Preux (+220) strategy, score takedowns to win rounds. If he can’t it will be a short night for him with Mousasi brutalizing his legs and body with kicks. If this makes it to later rounds the kicks of Mousasi will take their toll and tear down St. Preuz.

Prediction – Gegard Mousasi by way of unanimous decision

Woman’s Featherweight Bout

Cris Cyborg vs. Hiroko Yamanaka

In the woman’s featherweight division there is Cris Cyborg (10-1) and then everyone else. Her only loss came in her first professional bout back in 2005 and since then has been running through the competition. Of her ten wins eight have come by (T)KO which includes a knockout in 35 seconds and a TKO victory over Gina Carano.

Hiroko Yamanaka (12-1) is making her Strikeforce debut riding an eight fight win streak. She is tall for the featherweight division standing 5’11’’. Not known as a finisher she has gone the distance eight times all ending in her favor. In bouts she’ll use her height and long reach to frustrate her opponents.

It will take nothing short of a miracle for Yamanaka (+750) to get her hand raised in this fight. Santos (-1200) is too strong and too aggressive at 145 pounds and she will impose her will early and often. With a Chute Box background don’t be surprised if this fight doesn’t get outside the first.

Prediction – Cris Cyborg by way of TKO

Strikeforce Free Picks, Odds and Predictions

Lightweight Championship Bout

Gilbert “El Nino” Melendez (Champion) vs. Jorge “Gamebred” Masvidal (Challenger)

Gilbert “El Nino” Melendez (19-2) has been fighting for or defending the lightweight belt since 2006. Eight times he has stepped into the cage with this purpose and has only lost one of the eight. Melendez is quick with his strikes and takedowns while utilizing a pace that is hard for his opponents to keep up with.

Jorge “Gamebred” Masvidal (22-6) earned his title shot with back to back unanimous decision victories over Billy Evangelista and KJ Noons. He is a very well-rounded fighter with a good blend of outside striking and dirty boxing within the clinch. In his fight with KJ Noons he was able to use his jab to set up takedowns and battered the highly respected fighter.

The question of this fight is whether Masvidal (+240) will be able to keep up with the frantic pace of this fight. He has standup that is conducive to set up takedowns but look for him to try to keep this fight standing. Melendez (-320) will do what he always does, come out fast and wear his opponent down. Look for Melendez to do just that and when Masvidal begins to fade he’ll look to finish.

Prediction – Gilbert “El Nino” Masvidal by way of submission
